Twilight New Moon Take Vampire Saga To New Heights
The Twilight Saga first wowed audiences in book format, as teenagers were enthralled by the dark romance in Stephanie Meyer’s vampire novels. However, as the fang-fever spread and the popularity of the stories became apparent, the decision was made – much to the delight of the books’ many fans – that they would also be made into motion pictures. The first Twilight film hit the screens in 2008 and its fabulous reception ensured that a sequel would follow. Luckily, Meyer has four novels in the series, so film producers didn’t have to look far for a way to replicate the success of the first film.
And so the Twilight Saga: New Moon film went into production. Eagerly awaited by fans, the New Moon instalment in the Twilight tale opened in cinemas at the end of 2009. The film includes many of the same characters that made so many fall in love with the first film, including Bella Swan and her vampire boyfriend Edward Cullen.
However, it also sees the further introduction of her friendship with Jacob Black, who she discovers to be a werewolf. The rivalry between the two characters split the affections of fans and created a fad for taking the side of one over the other. Many Twilight fans will defend their positions passionately and it’s possible to buy Team Edward or Team Jacob T-shirts so fans can show which side they are on.
The leading actors Robert Pattinson as Edward, Kirsten Stewart as Bella and Taylor Lautner as Jacob returned for the second film in the saga and have been propelled into the spotlight on the back of the popular franchise. The franchise has proved very popular indeed, the midnight opening of the film set records as the biggest in Canadian and American history and knocked other popular teen film Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince off the top spot.
New Moon, as the second film in the saga, sets up a cliff-hanger for the next, while providing many thrills and spills of its own. The drama largely centres on the relationship between Bella and Edward, but supernatural elements and dark forces ensure it’s far from the average teenage romance. The next film in the series – The Twilight Saga: Eclipse – will arrive in the summer of 2010 while the Twilight New Moon DVD is set to hit the shelves this spring to slake the thirst of vampire-hungry fans the world over.

PLEASE READ DESRIPTION FIRST!!! Here are the reasons I chose these songs: Bella (Everytime We Touch) – I used this song for Bella because it kinda relates somewhat to how she feels everytime her and Edward touch. Edward (Seventeen Forever) – I used this song for Edward becasue it was kinda funny to me since he is physically 17 forever, it may be stupid to others but just deal with it. Alice (Sister Psychic) – I chose this song for Alice because she is a sister psychic to Edward, Emmett, Rosalie, and now Bella. Rosalie (Girlfriend) – I was originally going to use Don’t Cha by the Pussycat Dolls, but my computer wouldn’t allow me to so I just had to go with this. I chose this song because Rosalie feels like she is better than everyone else just because she is beautiful, and this song is kinda like saying “I know you love me and want to be my boyfriend”… sorta. Esme (1000 Miles) – Esme was really hard to find a song for and I used this song because Esme will do anything to be with her family and make them happy. Carlisle (How To Save A Life) – This one is pretty obvious but I’ll say it anyway. I used this song because Carlisle is a doctor and even though he hated what he had become(vampire), he was determined to save many peoples lives and to do that, he had to turn Edward and Esme into vampires or they would die. Jasper (Apologize) – I was going to do Blood by My Chemical Romance, but that didn’t plan out so I chose this song. I hink this song more relates to Jasper in …

When it comes to The Twilight Saga, there are lovers and haters, but very few in between. Regardless of caliber, Twihards will flock to the theaters to catch the latest installment while the defiant will shun their dedication. This review of Eclipse will have little to no effect on whether or not those lovers or haters will see the film, but in the case of those caught in the middle, hopefully it’ll persuade them to join the former – at least this time around.
Moody Bella (Kristen Stewart) is long gone and now our leading lady is back with her brooding bloodsucking boy, happy and, most importantly, far more confident in herself. Graduation is right around the corner and so is the day she’s longed for, the day Edward (Robert Pattinson) turns her into a vampire. The only thing Edward asks for Bella in return? For her to let him make her his forever by marrying her. While Bella and Edward are negotiating their I dos, Jacob (Taylor Lautner) is trying to maintain his position in the love triangle. Even though Bella professes her love for Edward, Jacob is convinced she loves him too, but just won’t admit it.
Meanwhile, Riley (Xavier Samuel), a newborn, is busy amassing an army of others just like himself, freshly turned. Not only are vampires more thirsty for blood in their early days, but they’re psychically stronger too, making a mass of newborns the perfect weapon against the Cullens. Riley stands at the head of this army, but it’s Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard) that’s calling the shots and she’ll do whatever it takes to avenge her lover James’ death at the family’s hands.
After Twilight and New Moon it’s easy to forget that vampires are brutal creatures and not just sulking sparklers, but here we’ve got David Slade behind the lens and he clearly still has some 30 Days of Night in his veins. Eclipse opens with a particularly dark and vicious scene, the one in which a helpless human Riley is hunted and bitten. The newborns command the film’s sinister side, most of their scenes involving them ravaging victims and leaving carnage and destruction in the Seattle streets.
Back in Forks, the skies are still overcast, but the atmosphere is rather sunny and after the New Moon sulk-fest, lighthearted moments are warmly welcomed. Our leading trio is still quite stiff, but someone must have told them to loosen up at least a little bit because for the first time in the franchise, they appear to be having some fun in their roles. Much of this comes from another new Saga addition, humor. The characters actually take a few jabs at themselves poking fun at the Twihard madness, goofing on elements like Jacob’s inability to conceal his abs. Jokes aside, there are even a few endearing moments the best of which takes place in a mountaintop tent during which Bella’s boys both want to keep her warm.
As for the supporting characters, sadly Anna Kendrick’s presence is reduced to a minimal yet memorable moment in which she delivers a commencement speech and Dakota Fanning’s Jane and the Volturi are practically nonexistent, but we do get a closer look at two of the Cullens, Jasper and Rosalie (Jackson Rathbone and Nikki Reed). Both are given their own flashback scenes through which we get a peak at how they got their fangs. The mini period pieces don’t exactly jibe with the modern setting, but their appeal makes their awkward inclusion a nonissue.

What is perfectly appropriate and long overdue is a massive battle scene. Not only is it packed with fantastic effects and intense violence, but its setup makes it much more than a device to quench your thirst for action. The rift between the Cullens and the wolves of Forks has been established, but here it becomes so much more than dirty looks and smack talk. By getting a glimpse of a wolf/vampire misunderstanding as well as a look into the wolf pack’s past, seeing them put their differences aside and fight side-by-side makes this combat far more powerful.
Even with monumental improvements, Eclipse is still far from perfect. From day one the series has been branded an artificial tale about an uninteresting girl in her mopey fight for love. Perhaps the imagination brought the story to life more vividly when reading the books, but on screen, in the first two films, Bella’s situation is as dreary as Forks’ weather. That doesn’t change in Eclipse for that is and will always be at the franchise’s core, but Slade manages to pile on enough excitement, character development and believable emotion on top of it to deliver a far improved product, one that actually makes having two more films coming our way an okay thing.

Four Vampire Movies You?ve Probably Never Heard Of
“Martin”
This early film by “Night of the Living Dead” director George A. Romero takes the movie and novel vampire clichés and spins them on their head, following the murderous and psychological problems of a young man who thinks he is a vampire. The movie never really comes forward with whether or not Martin is or isn’t an 85 year old vampire or if he is just a confused and shy 20 year old boy, which adds to the power and emotion of this unique take on vampire lore. Martin isn’t a “sexy” vampire with powers or hot cars with spoilers, he’s just a regular guy.
“Ultraviolet”
This strange mix of science fiction and vampirism flopped in the box office but is worth a viewing just for the great visual effects, fight scenes and beautiful Milla Jovovich. In the year 2078 after a global pandemic that gives the infected vampire-like powers but also kills them in 12 years, Violet is hired to steal a weapon that will be used to kill all infected on the planet. The plot is a bit silly but the fun twist on old-world vampirism in a future-setting is amusing.
“The Last Man on Earth”
This classic 1964 science fiction film is still powerful today thanks to a wonderful performance by Vincent Price and the dark, desolate, against-all-odds mood of the film. Dr. Robert Morgan is the last man on earth, struggling to survive against a world decimated and flooded by infected humans turned vampires. It is a slow movie but the viewer is rewarded some great scenes and a powerful, often-quoted climax.
“The Hunger”
Any vampire horror film that has David Bowie playing a stylish vampire is worth seeing in my book. This 1983 film has gained a cult following in recent years thanks to its moody, dark and glamorous atmosphere, as well as its soundtrack. Of course, now that the vampire genre is at an all-time peak thanks to “Twilight”, Warner Bros plans to remake the film for 2010. See the original first.

Buffy Vs. Twilight – A Slayer, A Swan, And A Vampire
Whether you are Team Edward or Team Jacob, Team Angel or Team Spike there is one thing that all of these fans have in common and that is passion, passion for the characters and stories that make up the two most popular contributions to the pop culture of vampires in the last 20 years. With that passion, as is often the case, comes debate and controversy.
In 2008, the film adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s book Twilight was released catapulting the series of books written by Stephanie Meyer off the charts. The Twilight craze had begun and fans all over the country devoured as much of the books, films, soundtracks and merchandise as possible. The series itself is four books, Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn.
There was another group of fans, a slightly older fan-base, that reacted with annoyance at the fans of the new craze claiming that this was nothing new, the storylines now famous bore a striking resemblance to the vampire culture that they had known and loved for 10-plus years, Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Buffy The Vampire Slayer, the TV series written by Joss Whedon, ran for seven seasons from 1997 through 2003. Gradually, the Buffy community began to grow ever more irritated at the attention being received by the Twilight series and the Twilight fans became equally as irritated claiming that the Twilight series was both different and superior to the Buffy series.
Twilight
While the Twilight craze was initiated by the release of the films, there was a large fan-base that was already in place; the books themselves had already generated a large following of devoted fans. I should warn the reader that I don’t consider someone a Twilight fan if they haven’t read the books, while the films are great; I am always biased towards the book in nearly every case. Whenever a book is adapted for film there is always so much material that is left out. The books chronicle the story of Bella Swan and her arrival in the town of Forks. She meets a young man named Edward who has a secret. The two of them fall in love and have to deal with the consequences related to friends, family, society and Edward’s secret.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
The Buffy The Vampire Slayer series chronicles the story of Buffy Summers, a girl with a secret, and her arrival in the town of Sunnydale. She meets a young man named Angel who has a secret. The two of them fall in love and have to deal with the consequences related to friends, destiny, fate and their respective secrets.
Stephanie Meyer maintains that she had never seen Buffy The Vampire Slayer prior to writing her series. The creation of the Twilight world began when she had a dream about the two main characters and a dialogue that they have, which sparked the novels, the world and pop culture. While there is no reason to disbelieve Stephanie Meyer, there are some significant similarities between the two series.
** Warning: The remainder of this article will cover content from both series that would be considered a spoiler if you have not read all of the Twilight Series or seen the entire Buffy The Vampire Slayer series.**
Buffy Summers and Bella Swan, both independent strong young women. Each of them are deposited into a new town and left to climb the mountain of integrating into a new school, making new friends and adjusting to life with a single parent.
Buffy falls in love with a vampire named Angel, Bella falls in love with a
Vampire named Edward.
The Buffy series had a werewolf named Oz who was part of the main cast of characters. Jacob is the werewolf in the Twilight Series.
Both of the female leads have a best friend (female) with supernatural powers.
Both series have a supernatural governing body, which sets rules for the worlds that they live in and disapproves of the relationship between vampire and human.
In each series there is a male vampire and his female companion who come to town to stir up trouble.
The topic of forbidden love, betrayal, and heartbreak are prevalent in both.
The best-guy friend of the female lead is a victim of unrequited love.
The list of similarities goes on for quite a while longer, however, the point has been made.
In spite of all of the similarities, there are many ways in which the two storylines deviate.
Buffy has supernatural powers from the introduction of her character and struggles with a dual identity through the entire series. Her life is a constant struggle between fate, destiny and free will. Bella does not come into full realization of her supernatural abilities until near the end of the series. While her story does not deal with such ominous ideas like fate and destiny, hers is more of a story of love, romance and family.
Buffy is never able to make her relationship with Angel work and while he will always be the love of her life, their relationship will never be fully realized. Bella and Edward at the end of the series find them selves in love, happy, with a daughter and an eternity laid out before them.
Buffy on a nearly weekly basis finds herself in the midst of a battle in which the fate of the world rests in the balance. Bella may feel often times that the world is ending but in reality the scope of her actions does not extend too far outside of Forks.
Buffy is a hero, with that comes struggle, resolve, failure and redemption. Bella is a teenager, relatable, fallible, and her character is developed intensely throughout the series.
In my mind, the verdict is simple, Twilight is not a remake, nor did Buffy The Vampire Slayer largely inspire it. While there may be some similarities in the details of the characters and plot elements that can easily be explained by the genre in which the stories where based. When you write stories about vampires in modern day times, when your lead is a teenage female, it should be expected that some of the same plot devices will be present in both. When analyzing the rites of passage and the inner workings of love in youth it is no wonder that the stories unfold in similar ways after all Buffy and Bella are both human.
The overarching storyline of Buffy The Vampire Slayer is that of a young woman who was destined by fate to be a hero. She struggles with the dual identity of being a normal girl who wants to fall in love and the Slayer who carries the responsibility of protecting the world from unimaginable evil. The Twilight series is a character study of a young teenager caught up in a star-crossed love affair. However, discounting either story because of its similarity to previous works sets a scary precedent for countless great works of fiction. Over and over again we see stories with storylines that closely mirror and are inspired by other works. Some of them have come to be milestones of popular culture. The Harry Potter series, the Inheritance series and even the Star Wars series are all rooted in literature that predates when it was written. It doesn’t negate the value or the entertainment inherent in those works. We are all inspired daily by things that we see, read, and hear. Our lives are the sum of our experiences and as writers take experiences and use them to inspire their work it is still valuable, still entertaining and still honest.
Why must there be a choice? Why must you be on Team Buffy or Team Twilight? I for one am a huge fan of both series. I think they are fantastic stories full of elaborate characters, and deal with issues that are far reaching beyond the superficial layer of entertainment, that should be what you take away from either series. That is what has generated fans on both sides that share one thing in common, passion.
