I’m not what you’d call the most “tech savvy” individual, but when my buddy suggested the ipad to me, I couldn’t resist. I bought one just several days right after it came, and fell in love with it. I could easily e-mail my friends, browse Facebook, and look at pictures of the kids. I was mainly captivated though by the eBook reading capabilities from the ipad. I believed that with my new ipad, I would never have to study a real paper publication once again. Then I discovered how much it would cost me for each and every book from the iBookstore. My high hopes of having an entire library of books on my ipad crumbled.

I figured there had to be an easier, less expensive way. After searching on Yahoo Answers, I found good evaluations from other ipad customers who experienced attempted this website known as myPadMedia and had enjoyed it. The site promised unlimited lifetime access allowing members to download thousands of books, comic books, newspapers and a lot more, all directly towards the Apple ipad. I gave it a go, and signed up.

I was really impressed! Within minutes of getting a fellow member, I was able to download the whole Twilight series to my ipad. Right after that, I downloaded Dan Brown’s most recent book ‘The Lost Symbol’ after which that controversial new Oprah biography. Nowadays we all find something to do every day. But are these “things” really important? Such things as checking face book for ten times a day. Why? Why can’t we all enjoy a little silence. A statistic went out and a survey of one hundred people determined that they these people check face book on average 40 times a day. Now these figures are staggering! What is so important that you need to check face book that much? Just recently I discovered that face book can be integrated into your own phone. That is just plain awful. There is no better distraction but to have alerts come in every minute or so about your picture or comment. Do you really care?

Besides, there are more important tasks to do in “real life” than that of imagined teenagers. If you can stay focused reading twilight all night and finishing the whole book in one night then what’s stopping you from taking on a bachelor’s degree at a top university? Now moving on, I know some friends who have dropped out of college and or university to work. Yes! It’s important, but realize that working without a degree will not get you anywhere. You must have some support and backup. Staying focused on short term goals such as finishing your associates or BA degree will open new doors in the future. Its crucial to stay focused, I can attest to this and it is extremely hard to pick up on your 3rd year of undergrad material when working part time. It is a complete pain. So why is it important to stay focused? Well, this increases stamina, brain development, time management, and overall integrity. Stay focused and earn that degree, no matter how hard it is, in the end it is worth it!

FIRST lines are a book’s greeting to the reader and therefore a vital element in the whole. If it strikes the wrong note, a weak opening can nullify a great cover or an enticing jacket blurb. On the other hand, a good initial hook captures the reader from the start. Yet does it signal a bestseller? Consider some of these.

One of my favourite openings is from 1984 by George Orwell, and reads thus: “It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.”

Now here’s another teaser, simple but grabbing, from The Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison: “I am an invisible man.”

Any book browser has to pursue such an outrageous first-person claim.

Or how about Dodie Smith’s opening to I Capture The Castle: “I write this sitting in the kitchen sink.”

Why the heck is she in the kitchen sink? One can’t help but read on.

The same, yet more dramatic, applies to the intro of Run Maggie Run by John Ivor, which has been compared to a Dickens tale: “A finger of sunshine poked through the grime of courtroom windows, polished the dock’s varnished panels and created a halo for the prisoner, she who was known as Maggie, age nine. The charge was murder.”

A later novel, No Kiss For A Killer, allows John Ivor to flow fast action from line one: “There was a time, a desperate time, when I cursed the gentle mists of my native Oxfordshire and regretted its picturesque vales and folds. Among the fruitful brown and green a deceptive dip will conceal the approach of riders.”

Dickens himself is not noted for his openings, which are usually wordy and mild. His first published fiction, The Pickwick Papers, starts like this: “The first ray of light which illumines the gloom, and converts into a dazzling brilliancy that obscurity in which the earlier history of the public career of the immortal Pickwick would appear to be involved, is derived from the perusal of the following entry in the Transactions of the Pickwick Club, which the editor of these papers feels the highest pleasure in laying before his readers, as a proof of the careful attention, indefatigable assiduity, and nice discrimination, with which his search among the multifarious documents confided to him has been conducted.”

All one can say to that verbosity is Ouch!

However, the opening of a later Dickens novel is often quoted: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”

That is how he begins A Tale of Two Cities, which is a story of the French Revolution.

Another oldie, less intense than guillotine days but more intriguing in commencement, is still widely popular: “Here is Edward Bear, coming downstairs now, bump, bump, bump, on the back of his head, behind Christopher Robin . . .”

Guessed it? Winnie the Pooh, by A.A. Milne.

Charles Bryce uses the same technique to charm children in introducing Mousedeer: “Deep in the forest comes a breeze. Hush! Hear it whisper . . .”

For browsers, whether in a bookshop or online, first lines become mightily important in deciding whether to buy an unknown author. These lines need not necessarily be thrilling or puzzling. The only need is to get the reader’s interest.

Here’s one I particularly like. It introduced me to The Feng Shui Detective’s Casebook by Nury Vittachi: “The tiger loping through the supermarket had blue eyes.”

If that doesn’t grab you, nothing will. Now let’s glance at some current bestsellers.

Stieg Larsson, late author of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and other super sellers, doesn’t bother with a clever hook. He simply sweeps straight into the action, like a movie. His narrative comes close to ponderous, often boring, and yet it keeps moving.

While a good opening will influence a sale, it never guarantees a bestseller. There is no way to prejudge mass appeal. The phenomenal Stephenie Meyer began her Twilight series with an insipid girls’ school scene. No hint here of vampires and scary doings, nor worldwide fame for the author.

Dan Brown begins The Lost Symbol in gripping fashion, thus: “The secret is how to die.”

His thriller degenerates thereafter, yet still it has soared to bestseller status. It has the most valuable ingredient of all – a brandname author.

The 2009 Booker Prize winner Hilary Mantel opens Wolf Hall with a spoken jibe: “So now get up. Felled, dazed, silent, he has fallen; knocked full length on the cobbles of the yard.”

This is ongoing action, the middle of a fight, and encourages a read-on.

Bryce McBryce gives first lines his own delightful twist. The amusing and nostalgic Wee Charlie’s World starts thus: “Smaller than a kitbag and only four years, the youngest in that army, Charlie watched the soldiers come aboard: pith helmets, khaki shorts, puttees, boots, bolt-action rifles.”

The above book is presented as linked short stories while a boy grows from age four to nine pondering the weirdness of adults. All McBryce chapter opening are good, but one demanding instant attention kicks off The Spirit of Waterloo: “Alphonse haunted the garrison school because it was there. It was heavily there, on his grave.”

Brilliant lead-ins will always have their place in literature but do they really matter to the eventual destiny of a book? This is a question I challenge readers to answer, because there is no analysis that can enlighten us for sure. Apart from brandname authors who sell millions on reputation alone, it remains a mystery how book readers will respond to a particular title. Happy reading! So You Want to Sell Comic Books

When I was a kid I dreamed that one day I would have my very own store and that I would sell comic books to the local children. Comic books were so much a part of my life growing up and it was the same for my son as he was growing. When I was a kid it was Spiderman and The Fantastic Four, or any of the other Marvel titles. My son however loved Superman and he collected all the great Superman titles of the mid to late 1980s when Superman had a resurgence of popularity.

Drawing Comic Books and Graphic Novels for a Living

What artistically inclined kid has not dreamed of one day drawing comic books for a living? To be able to sell your doodling and make a great living seems too good to be true. Imagine finishing your first comic book for Marvel or DC and becoming an international sensation. You can then go back to your grammar school teachers and wave the comics in their face while lighting your cigar with a 0 bill.

It’s Easy to buy Comic Books Online

Back in the good old days, if a kid had a quarter in his pocket he would jump on his skateboard or Schwinn Stingray bicycle and head as fast as he could to the five-and-dime and pick up the newest copy of Spiderman or my favorite, Journey into Mystery featuring the Mighty Thor. These great Marvel Silver Age comics are now worth thousands of dollars and it all started with some kid and his quarter.

Beyonce
Is Beyonce actually receiving some negative publicity? It seems she performed a concert on New Year’s Eve for the Kadafi family who paid her a large sum of money (some say million) and this has upset many of her fans. Hannibal Kadafi, Moammar’s son was the host of the New Year’s shindig. Hannibal was reported to have severely beaten his model wife in turn breaking her nose during the Christmas weekend. He has a violent history and has driven drunk in the past leading police on a high-speed chase. He has killed 270 people. Hannibal is bad news but always seems to get away with whatever he wants because of his father constantly protecting him. Many question how Beyonce could have just sang for the President and First Lady’s dance then go and sing for a terrorist family. Other artists at this concert were Lindsay Lohan, Russell Simmons, Jay-Z, Usher and Bon Jovi.

Gaga for Comic Books
Lady Gaga a comic book character? She certainly has a one-of-a-kind style and I’m sure she’ll look interesting in a comic book! Are you wondering what her powers will be? Bluewater Productions’ new comic book series Fame will focus on the lives of superstars. Gaga will be the heroin for the first edition of the series and will grace its cover. The company is looking forward to expanding their clientele by appealing to a new audience. Many people have become comic book fans by reading Female Force and Political Power, both of which are distributed by this company.

Eli Roth
Eli Roth may have found some inspiration for a new horror film during his stay in Careyes. Look out Cabin Fever… Here it comes… Attack of the Killer Sea Urchins! Apparently Roth was swimming a mile away from shore when he was suddenly sucked underwater by a sinkhole! He grabbed hold of the nearest rock and started climbing but was surprised to realize that the rock was home to a large amount of sea urchins! The urchins stabbed through Roth’s skin with their spikes! Roth was lucky enough to be saved in the nick of time by a nearby fisherman! His doctor pried the spikes out of his skin and Eli is expected to still make an appearance at the People’s Choice Awards tonight!

Taylor Lautner
Twilight: New Moon actor Taylor Lautner is officially about to become one of the “highest paid teen actors” according to US Magazine. The future film Northern Lights is what will help Lautner reach this level. He will be starring in the new film alongside Tom Cruise and will make a whopping .5 million- not too shabby. Lautner’s career has exploded since his debut in New Moon and he has been approached with movie deals left and right. He is also expected to play the leading role in the upcoming film titled Max Steel based on the comic book.

Quickies:

Actor Gary Coleman from the 80’s TV show Diff’rent Strokes was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital because he claimed that he was not “feeling well”. He is undergoing a battery of tests because of the two kidney replacements he had in the past.

It seems that Rihanna has moved on from her relationship with Chris Brown and has begun to see more of LA Dodgers baseball player Matt Kemp!

Actress Rachel Weisz was delighted to find out that she was voted as the “Top Fantasy Wife” of the U.K. according to Esquire Magazine. Keira Knightley came in second followed by Kate Winslet.

The film Precious is expected to be huge at the 41st annual NAACP Image Awards. It is nominated for outstanding independent film and outstanding motion picture and outstanding independent film, not to mention the attention the actors have received for their performances.
