I’ve been a fan of David Slade since I watched his debut film Hard Candy, and even though his second film 30 Days of Night didn’t quite floor me as much as his debut, I still loved his visual style. With his third film Slade has directed the best Twilight film to date, it still wasn’t my cup of tea, but it was about 122354905 times more exciting than New Moon. I accept that the Twilight series is not made for me, my reaction to this film is not– omg omg omg omg EDWARD IS SOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOT, I’m team Jacob <3<3<3<3 luvluvluvluvluv……..to be honest I couldn’t give a rats ass, but seeing as this series has a MASSIVE audience (the caps lock still doesn’t do the ‘massive’ justice) it’s connecting with people.
Below is the result of me catching up with David Slade at the London Press Conference for ‘The Twilight Saga: Eclipse’. Eclipse has already broken the box office record for a midnight opening in the US, and I’m sure it will have the teenage population going nutty over here when it opens in the UK this Friday.
How did you get involved with Twilight?
David Slade: The producers sent me New Moon, the book, and I started reading it. I’m a slow reader and Chris Weitz was signed, but I don’t think I was ever really a contender for it to be honest. When Eclipse came around they sent me the screenplay. It was mad, there was a week and three days between them sending me the script and saying, would you like to do the film? It was all very quick. Thankfully there was no dark moment of the soul where I had to think about it too much!
How did you find it directing Twilight: Eclipse? Especially considering you didn’t direct the first two films, were there certain constraints for you?
David Slade: Obviously there’s continuity, there actors and actresses have done it twice before, so the most important thing for me was to listen. I had one-on-one meetings with each and everyone and listened to what they loved about the other movies, with regards to their characters, what worked out, what didn’t work out, what they want and then we’d talk about script. After all the talking I knew exactly where they were at, as well as what I was after To that extent I was fully informed.
In terms of constraints, the reason they got different directors was to have a different aesthetic. I was just so immersed in making the film that it became my own film, by virtue of it being in my head so much. If anything I was encouraged to do more and be more different. I’m not particularly reverential. I only saw the first Twilight film once. From the very first meeting we said this was the most mature film, that is was going to be more realistic in every way. There were no constraints besides the obvious things.
What do you think the appeal is for the Twilight series?
David Slade: It’s a love story, a true love story. These days we live in such ironic times in terms of media coverage and the way that people write scripts and write dialogue, irony is such part of the zeitgeist now. To find something so unapologetically a true love story is so rare and it’s nice. It wears it on its sleeve, which is quite healthy, it’s nice to see true love as a nice thing, not to get all angsty. I also believe what Stephenie has done with the vampire is somewhat institutionalized it and made it acceptable and given it a family, something that can be pur, but at the same time at the end of the day it’s dangerous because it’s a carnivore. He goes out into the woods and rips bears apart and drinks their blood. It’s taking the unattainably dangerous and making it loveable. Those two things together are really attractive.
What was your take on the theme of chastity?
David Slade: I think we had to address it because I didn’t want Edward to come across as a prude. He really wants to have sex and you can tell he does., but he comes from a different period. I don’t think the film dictates that message. I think if anything, it does two things: it reverses the role which neutralises the men and not the women and two, in a time when women are over-sexualised it suggest that you don’t have to jump into sex straight away, which isn’t the same as some kind of Biblical chaste message. It’s more about timing and being in control

I thought Eclipse was the best of the three movies so far, though not by as large a margin over New Moon as New Moon was over Twilight. New director David Slade retained the same look established by the first installment and continued, for better or worse (in my opinion worse) by the second………
The script wasn’t the greatest; there were lines that got thrown in that seemed more like they had to put them in because they come back later than because they necessarily made sense or were properly explained in this movie. One glaring example is Jacob off-handedly saying he didn’t want to be the Alpha, with no explanation given as to why he would have been in the first place. There wasn’t much in the way of explanation given for why the newborns existed, either, or what Victoria’s grand scheme was, so if you were new to the franchise (as my companion was), that might have been hard to follow. They rearranged certain scenes to try and amp up the competition between Edward and Jacob that really just made things nonsensical—like when Bella cuts school to spend the day with Jake, she leaves Edward in the parking lot to do it, and there’s not any discussion between her and Jacob at all. She just says “why haven’t you called me back?” “I had nothing to say” and then she gets on his bike. Uh, what?
Also, there was way too much kissing. It wasn’t particularly exciting kissing, and the abundance of it really only devalued what there was even more. Like, in the opening scene, Edward and Bella are in their meadow and they start to kiss, and the entire theater started snickering. Not really how you want to open a movie, you know? And there was more sexual tension between Edward and Jacob in the tent than there was between Bella and either of them the entire time. None of the kisses felt particularly hot or nice to watch; they all sort of looked the same, even when they were between different characters. Slade should definitely stick to action and avoid rom-coms in his future features.
But on the other hand, the action was pretty good. The opening sequence showing Riley being turned was actually pretty tense and kind of scary. The filming was as good as it was in New Moon, with a few cool or mildly unusual angles to keep the visuals interesting. The PG13 rating was a shame, because there could have been some ace ripping apart of vampires or smashing up their ice-stone-sculpture bodies with an R rating. There was bit of that creativity in violence, but the camera always pulled away just before the image got too graphic. The overall design look of detached vampire flesh was pretty neat, though.
One personal highlight was Jasper actually getting to tell his story (and they used flashbacks), simply because I like his story. The ridiculous setting of where he was “riding back to Galveston” made me laugh, because that was nowhere near Galveston. They used flashbacks for both Rosalie and the Quileute legends, as well.
Overall the movie was still not objectively good, and for die-hard fans of the books I think it lacked the intensity and portent of the book. But it was for the most part faithful to the story, with a few scenes of the newborns in Seattle and on the move thrown in to incorporate their activities from the new novella into the events of the novel. And it could have been a lot worse, so, overall, it’s a thumbs up. If you’re already into this series of movies, it shouldn’t surprise or dismay you; it fits right in with the others, and ends exactly where the book does this time around to leave everything in stasis for the big finale.

After the prestigious success of the two past films Twilight and Twilight Saga: New Moon, here comes the 3rd part of the story based upon the novel of Stephenie Mayer The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. As we all knew Twilight is a series of four vampire-based fantasy romance novels, it focus the life of teenage girl who moves to Fork, Washington and fall-in-love to a 104 years old vampire and that is Edward Cullen.
As I recall the first series of the book, Bella (seventeen-year-old that time) move to her fathers’ place after her mother remarries to a baseball player. She then go to school and meet new friends but things got change when she saw Edward Cullen entering at the canteen. At first glance Bella sense something to Edward which she can’t hardly explained, especially when Edward acted like he is being disgusted to her. Few days later Bella finds her self being star struck to Edwards’s handsome face and was not able to see the rushing van but luckily in just a blink Edward moves to Bella’s place and stop the Van by his bare hands. That makes Bella puzzled and starts asking Edward regarding with the incident but get no answer to Edward. Out of curiosity, Bella do some research and eventually find the answer to her question. But knowing that Edward is a vampire won’t change of what she feels for him.
Later after both sides fell-in-love to each other and Bella was introduce to Edwards family, new problems arise in a much unexpected situation. While Cullen’s family is having their favorite games tree nomadic vampire’s arrived and finds out that one of them is human. That starts the battle between the Cullen’s family and one of the three nomadic vampires named James. James as a tracker vampire intrigued by Edwards’s protectiveness to Bella and was given a change to abduct Bella. Again Edward arrives just right on time and was able to save Bella. After that incident the two finds them self on a ball but the story ends on Victoria (also one of the three nomadic vampires), secretly watching the pair dancing (revenge was written all over her face).
