Ever wonder what the greatest on screen love triangle is?

This age old question has finally been answered by Lovefilm (or at least by users of the UK DVD rental giant’s website) and to the surprise of many it’s the love between a vampire a human and a werewolf that has hit the top spot.

If you haven’t already guessed it – and, if you haven’t, where have you been for the last few years? come on, speak up, you at the back – the film I’m talking about is Twilight.

The film’s leading protagonists Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) have captured the imagination of millions across the world.

The third in the series, Twilight Eclipse, opened in cinemas recently to scenes of fans camping over night and queuing around the block to be among the first to see how the love triangle pans out.

Although it might not have be the critics favourite choice it has been widely quoted that Twilight fans are among the most devoted fans in the film world. This accolade has help Twilight top a number of different polls and fan votes in the last few years.

Unfortunately, though, Twilight Eclipse isn’t yet available as a DVD rental so luckily there were some more suggestions of love triangles that you can take home with a DVD rental site like Lovefilm.

Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Paul Henreid’s love triangle in Casablanca, often quoted as one of the greatest love stories of all time it also gave the world one of the most memorable film lines ever.

In all these films, the set-up is the same: the female protagonist is torn between a typically ‘bad’ but exciting character and a noble, nice but less exciting ‘good’ one.

Maybe it’s the Casablanca effect, echoing down the filmic ages, or perhaps it’s just that less dramatic set ups – such as in the French film Jules et Jim – resonate less with an audience.
