Your students have finals coming up soon. They need to be studying non-stop, re-reading and analyzing a semester’s worth of information. Instead, they – along with millions of others nationwide – crashed the New Moon movie opening to the tune of 0 million. Rather than view it as a distraction from assigned reading, try to capitalize on the fact that the author, Stephanie Meyer, is a huge fan of classic lit – and makes it known throughout the series.

For example, the young lovers’ interactions in Twilight, the first in the series, was loosely modeled after the Darcy-Elizabeth dynamic in Pride and Prejudice: Edward, the handsome vampire, falls for the human Bella against his will (not to mention his better judgment), initially alienating her with his shocking rudeness but ultimately pursuing her despite already being slated for another woman. Luckily for us, Meyer forgoes giving Bella any suitors that could rival Mr. Collins in obnoxiousness.

In the second novel New Moon, Edward’s sudden disappearance leaves Bella consulting the classics for relationship advice. Comparing her and Edward’s forbidden romance to that of Romeo and Juliet, Bella asks herself, is it possible to survive without love? How would the story be different if Juliet had gone for Paris after Romeo’s death? Should she continue seeing Jacob at the risk of upsetting Edward? Romeo and Paris duel in the play, Bella recollects, and “Paris falls.” Of course, the fact that Bella’s “Romeo” is already dead gives her a bit of an unfair advantage in the decision-making department, but the analogy still works.

As a whole, the Twilight series is full of literary allusions, including everything from George Orwell to Geoffrey Chaucer. Meyer strategically places her favorite books on her heroine’s bookshelf so that the series’ characters can discuss the best parts. On her website, Meyer even admits that she named her male lead with some of her other favorite heroes in mind, such as Edward Ferrars from Sense and Sensibility and Edward Rochester from Jane Eyre. Moreover, Twilight’s Bryonic hero motif has reinvigorated popular interest in the Brontë sisters, and sales of Wuthering Heights are reportedly skyrocketing in France. Obsessed though your students may be, enthusiasm isn’t one of those teacher resources you can find just anywhere.

Twilight Eclipse Movie Review Posted by: Sheila Roberts

In this action-packed, third installment of the modern-day love story adapted from Stephenie Meyer’s best selling novel, teenager Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) once again finds herself at the epicenter of danger when Seattle is ravaged by a series of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge.

Bella still lives with her dad, Charlie Swan (Billy Burke), in the rainy town of Forks, Washington and remains grounded because of her Italian adventures in New Moon. But Charlie makes it clear that could change if she would date someone else besides Edward, namely Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner). But Bella is having none of it. She only has eyes for the mysterious and handsome Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) who she tries hard to convince to “change” her. However, Edward is a traditionalist and he’s in no hurry. Love stinks, literally, but when a clan of new, bloodthirsty vampires comes to town, things get worse. Bella is confronted with the most important decision of her life when she finds herself in the uncomfortable position of having to choose between boyfriend Edward and best friend Jacob and possibly destroy the tenuous truce between vampire and werewolf.

Director David Slade stays faithful to Meyer’s novel as the star-crossed lovers continue to navigate the treacherous terrain of interspecies dating. He’s assembled a solid cast and gets strong performances from his young actors. Eclipse is much more action-oriented than Twilight and New Moon. Slade proves adept at handling the small, intimate scenes, like when Charlie awkwardly attempts to explain the birds and the bees to Bella, as well as the large action sequences when the vampires confront the werewolves in a climatic battle. The tone is harsher, the fight scenes are more scrappy and feral, and the vampire action is more visceral. The cast is also expanding with new characters coming into the story and more of the history is being revealed. Slade’s visual style is engaging and makes an unusual story even more unique. The look and tone of the film reveals his awareness that each book gets a little bit darker than the last, so each subsequent movie in the franchise needs to be darker and edgier.

Eclipse explores the romantic love triangle between Edward, Jacob and Bella which is believable thanks to the great chemistry all three actors have on screen together. Stewart delivers a soulful, nuanced performance as the self-possessed high school senior now contemplating college who is hopelessly in love with a vampire. Pattinson, with his movie star good looks, remains intriguing as the brooding, romantic hero with a moral conscience who has finally found his soul mate and isn’t about to lose her to a werewolf. Lautner’s growth as an actor is apparent in several dramatic scenes opposite Stewart and Pattinson. He is also adept at handling the physicality required by his role.

Pattinson delivers some memorable dialogue without the slightest hint of irony, like when he confronts the buff, bare-chested Jacob and says “Why can’t you put a shirt on?” The tent scene is especially entertaining because Edward and Jacob are forced to team up to protect Bella but cannot set aside their jealous rivalry long enough to stop bickering over her. Jacob’s “I’m hotter than you” retort to Edward is the best line of dialogue in the film.

Charles Beaumont was one of the power writers behind The Twilight Zone television series. Many modern authors regard Beaumont as one of the most influential writers of his time.

Originally know as Charles Leroy Nutt, Beaumont changed his last name because of constant teasing and embarrassment. Beaumont’s foray into professional writing began in 1951, with a short story published in Amazing Stories called “The Devil, You Say?” Beaumont moved from Chicago to Los Angeles where he met and married Helen Broun. Beaumont, his wife, and four children lived in North Hollywood, California.

Beaumont went on to work for Playboy magazine and then for television and film. His Twilight Zone script “The Howling Man” starred John Carradine, and his other classic “Miniature” starred a young Robert Duvall. Beaumont’s role in The Twilight Zone is revealed in Money Secrets of the Rich and Famous. His collections of short stories including “The Hunger and Other Stories.” “The Magic Man,” “Night Ride and Other Journeys,” and “Yonder,” revealed his brilliant and creative mind.

At the age of 34, Beaumont’s health began to deteriorate. While working on an autobiography, he began to exhibit personality changes. Beaumont’s demeanor became childlike and possessive, with uncharacteristic outbursts of aggressive and belligerent behavior. Beaumont had also developed an intense interest in religion.

In August 1964, his physician, intenist Dr. I. Pfeffer, referred him to the Neuropsychiatric unit at UCLA for evaluation. By this time, Beaumont had slowing of speech, decreased memory, and appeared ten years older than his stated age. He was diagnosed as having chronic brain syndrome of unknown cause.

Beaumont’s prolific career included scripts for 22 Twilight Zone episodes and over 85 short stories. Autographs from Charles Beaumont are occasionally found in two of the books he wrote. Despite his early demise only four years after his diagnosis, Beaumont still commands a place as one of the towering figures in the genre of fantasy and science fiction.

Not too long ago Anne Rice was the queen of vampire fiction with her creation of the legendary Lestat. However, in the past few years Stephenie Meyer with her Twilight Saga, Charlaine Harris with True Blood, and other authors with their vampire creations have stormed the best seller charts. But what are the most popular series with the legions of online vamp lit fans?

The top ten most popular (based on online chatter) vampire book series are:

…and the most popular Vampire Lit Series is no surprise…

1. The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer

Not quite making the top ten were Night Huntress by Jeaniene Frost, Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith, Undead and … by MaryJanice Davidson, Blue Bloods by Melissa de la Cruz, Vampire Beach by Alex Duval, Night World by L.J. Smith, Nikki and Michael by Keri Arthur, Mackenzie Vampires by Nina Bangs, and Almost Human by Melanie Nowak. The top two series on this list have also been adapted for the screen, with the wildly popular Twilight Saga movies and True Blood television series on HBO. This can have only helped their dominance in this poll. While great literature does not need to be adapted for the screen, it will clearly raise awareness of a series and bring in a whole new group of fans. A Darren Shan motion picture (Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant) will be released in late 2009. Both House of Night and Vampire Academy films or TV adaptations are almost inevitable, although neither seem to be even close to production. If the new CW Network TV series based on L. J. Smith’s Vampire Diaries is a hit, then those novels are bound to be in the top ten for my next vamp lit poll. And, finally, it is lovely to see that modern vampire literature icon and pioneer Anne Rice made the list, even if she was not in the top five. Oddly, only two of Anne Rice’s novels (Interview with the Vampire and The Queen of the Damned) were ever turned into feature films.

I compiled this list by searching for each of the vampire book series on a number of search engines and ranking them by the number of web pages, discussion forums, photos, videos, etc that are available online. Read more about vampires at SpookyFiles.com.

For those looking for a GREAT vampire series with lots of originality – try the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series – By JR Ward. Best series I have read so far. Lots more action that the Sookie Stackhouse novels. I can’t believe it didn’t make the list…

I don’t see how Anne’s books are not at the top of the list. They were the most captivating books I have ever read. I did the Twilight Series and they were great but to be that far behind on the list is just outrageous. She has freaking college classes based around her works, COME ON!
