You’re bound to have seen them during your travels around the Internet: Name Generators. These widgets can be fairly humorous, especially if you’re bored or just sitting around with friends trying to come up with new nicknames for each other.

All sorts of generators have been created; here are just a few that a fast search on Google turned up:

Hours and hours of fun, right? Sure! But there’s an ominous side to the world of these Name Generators. There are actually criminals out there who would use the harmless amusement of finding out your pirate name for their own diabolical purposes, so beware.

Usually, name generators ask you to enter just your first name, sometimes your surname too. There are those, however, that ask for your mother’s maiden name, place of birth, and/or other personal information. Now, I don’t know how you feel about it, but I’m not going to provide my mother’s maiden name to some anonymous site just to find out my Jedi Warrior name, and neither should you.

Any site that asks for such information should be immediately suspect and you should leave it immediately. Otherwise, you could end up with your identity stolen and nothing to show for it except your new name, Skinky Twaddlesnorz.

The Internet is a weird and wonderful place, but evil abounds, and common sense is key.
