2009 was undisputedly the year of the vampire. From the continued success of the “Twilight” franchise to HBO’s “True Blood” getting so hot that it even spawned its own beverage, vampires don’t appear to be going anywhere. And many different television channels have desperately tried to get a piece of the action, with various history and science programming devoting episodes to various vampire myths and history. Whether it is a cerebral approach to one of the oldest characters in literature and films or just a fabulously entertaining movie or television shows, vampires have definitely made their mark on satellite tv lately.
While the “Twilight” movies aren’t the best for many audiences, they have been very popular with younger viewers, who seem delighted at sparkly vampires who play sports and offer up a chaste version of high school relationships in comparison with a lot of other entertainment. However, most viewers agree that “Twilight” cannot hold a candle to the southern Gothic take on vampires presented on “True Blood.” Based on a book series that imagines a world where vampires have “come out of the coffin” thanks to synthetic blood, “True Blood” was the must-watch program on satellite tv recently and managed to draw millions of viewers each night of its second season. Ladies swoon for a number of lovable vampires and non-vampires, including the ancient but very dreamy in a Nordic way vampire sheriff Eric, the demure southern gentleman turned vampire Bill Compton, and a number of other dreamy humans.
The reason that “True Blood” manages to enjoy such success and has been picked up for a third season is that it is the brainchild of Alan Ball, who is known for creating the equally humorous and dark series “Six Feet Under,” as well as for his role in writing “American Beauty,” the Oscar-winning film. A southerner with a gift for storytelling, Ball manages to take the vampire fad and do one of the most creative and most popular shows on satellite tv, one which will surely continue to endure once the love for all things fanged reaches a waning point.
For those who just cannot get enough of vampires in fiction, there are a number of other options on television, and for once, they aren’t just on during Halloween. The History Channel has a couple of different programs devoted to looking at historical perception of vampires, including the different cultures that share similar beliefs, ways in which the vampire myth terrorized during the Middle Ages, and how it continues to endure today. Since there is such a collective fascination with vampires that dates long before this recent revival, The History Channel does a great job in answering so many questions about why vampires are as popular as they are.
So for all of those vampire-lovers or mere fans who need to find themselves an appropriate substitute on television while waiting for the latest HD hijinks of their favorite vampire film franchise, don’t despair. There are more than enough choices for you, from the informative to the just plain entertaining.

Teenagers just can’t get enough of them. They’re all over billboards. They’re on every magazine page. They are seen on TV. – They are everywhere! We’re talking about the teenage craze that has hit every part of the globe today. Here they are:
Justin Beiber. Probably the most popular teenager of his time, Justin Bieber was born in 1994. This wonder boy was first discovered on Youtube. Because of his impeccable talent and charm, he became a hit maker in months. He has captured the hearts of girls, young and old alike, from all across the world. Bieber is the first ever artist to have seven songs from a debut album enter the Billboard Hot 100. When his single “Baby” was released in January 2010, he became a certified teen idol of his generation.
Facebook. Founded by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004, Facebook has reached over 500 million users from all over the globe. People use this site not just to connect with friends and family but also to chat with online friends, to meet new people, to sell stuff, etc. But for most teenagers, Facebook is a gaming ground. What makes this site very interesting is the wide range of interactive games that thrill people to keep coming back. Beachtown, one of the newest gaming applications on Facebook, gives players the chance to recreate a virtual world of the beach. It’s the perfect pastime and stress buster especially for beach bums who want to feel the aloha spirit all the time.
Twilight. Aside from Harry Potter, Highschool Musical, and Camp Rock, Twilight has also captured the hearts of the teens. They patronize books, soundtracks, movies, including Twilight merchandises that are out in the market today.
Apple. iPod, iPad, Mac – one of these is sure to make it into every teenager’s Christmas list. Macs may be an excuse because they are major necessities in school. iPods and iPads are luxuries but more and more teenagers are tucking one inside their backpacks
The Jonas Brothers. They are cute and they sing good music. Who would not love them? Their concerts are jam-packed and they get the loudest cheers from the crowd. Just like Justin Beiber, the Jonas Brothers are certified teen icons of their generation.
Some of us may not fully understand the charm that these teen hits have on teenagers today but for the younger people, they are their world and they make their lives even more colorful.

With the highly-anticipated Twilight : Eclipse coming out this summer, the popularity of vampires in film and on television is far from over. If you’re not up to speed on the many vampire characters all over the media, you still have time to catch up before the latest adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s work is released in June. Simply turn on your satellite tv and you’re bound to run across one of the following 5 vampire movies and television shows, which influenced modern culture in a big way. These films really demonstrate how vampire-themes have gained so much popularity in recent years.
5. True Blood, the television series (2008-present) This HBO drama presented in HD was so successful in it’s first season that it won an Emmy and a golden globe. Set in smalltown America, this series not only focuses on your typical blood-sucking vampire plots, but also on that of it’s protagonist Sookie Stackhouse, who has the amazing ability to read minds. The great acting talent that fills the cast of True Blood also does a great job of depicting life in Southern Louisiana, and of course, there are great romantic storylines throughout the series that keep your attention focused on the human aspect of the characters.
4. Blade (1998) – Wesley Snipes embodies Blade, a half-vampire half-human character created by the brilliant minds at Marvel Comics. As far as vampire-based action goes, this film is unique for being one of the first to include obese vampires, part-human/part-vampire characters, and African-American vampires. The film focuses on Blade’s quest to kill vampires in order to save humans. Along the way, audiences are entertained by his relationships with a vampire-bitten doctor, his mentor, and his mother.
3. Twilight (2008) – Tragic romances never fail to entertain audiences. This time, the two teenage lovers are not from feuding families, but rather, one is a human and one is a vampire. Melissa Rosenberg’s brilliant adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s first book centers around the love between high-school classmates Edward and Bella. Edward is a good vampire who has to go great lengths to protect her from evil vampires.
2. Twilight: New Moon (2009) – In this sequel to the first film in the Twilight Series, Bella is depressed after Edward leaves her in order to keep his “family” of vampires from being tempted to harm her. Dramatic storylines involving vampires, werewolves, a near-suicide, and transformations make this film more enthralling than the first. Before you can watch Twilight : Eclipse in June, be sure to watch the first two films in high definition so you don’t miss any of the dramatic plot of the third film.
1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the television series (1997-2003) – Running for a total of 7 seasons, this series focused on the lives of several young friends as they went from high school to college. This series is unique for having a female protagonist, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, who just so happens to have superhuman abilities to slay vampires. The series includes storylines related to humans falling in love with vampires, werewolves, and witches. Not only does it include romantic and action-packed plots, but the series also covers several deep topics such as the death of a parent, communism, homosexuality, and life after death. The series’ popularity continues through it’s passionate fanbase that holds Buffy conventions, and it lives on through a comic book series. Be sure to catch reruns of this show on your satellite tv channels.

In the 1990s, the television show Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a cult hit. Based on an 1980s film with the same name, it attracted millions of viewers and ran for several years – despite its somewhat cliché subject. Though its following was less-than mainstream (and that of its spin-off Angel even less so), it earned a place in American television and pop culture history, receiving critical acclaim for its use of vampires and demons as metaphors for the challenges of growing up.
After the era of Buffy came and went, many assumed that the theme of vampires, at least for a while, would disappear, too. In recent months, however, these mythical creatures have come front and center. From Twilight to True Blood to The Vampire Diaries, vampire-themed television shows and films have become all the rage. More and more television watchers find themselves switching their high definition televisions to HBO to watch True Blood and flocking to theaters to see Twilight than ever before. And while before, vampire-themed entertainment was somewhat taboo, today, it is more popular than ever.
What does this recent obsession with these creatures that have existed in myths and fairy tales for hundreds of years mean? There is no clear answer.
A most obvious and perhaps correct answer is that this vampire rage is simply a fad. With the success of the Twilight book series and subsequent films, it is easy to argue that many in the entertainment business simply jumped on the bandwagon in hopes of making a quick buck. With the increasing popularity of satellite TV, television stations are competing harder than ever for viewers’ attention. Knowing that the attention and interest of audiences has been piqued by the vampires of Twilight, writers and producers hope that similarly themed shows have a similar effect. Much like the reality craze of the 1990s, the vampire craze may be nothing more than simple domino effect.
There are, however, other explanations. Though vampires have recently reemerged with a great amount of force in media and entertainment, they have been a fixture of storytelling for hundreds of years. Vampires appear in stories that date back hundreds of years ago. The myths of wooden stakes, crosses, garlic and sunlight are drawn from tales told long, long ago. Maybe, the inclusion of these blood-sucking creatures in our literature and cultures actually says something about us.
What, of course, the existence of vampires in our mythology could mean is tough to pinpoint. One possible explanation for the current craze, however, could be linked to the reality of the world around us. In a world that seems to be increasingly in crisis, mythological and incredible tales serve as an escape. Vampires and demons serve as manifestations of the evils we face in real life – war, crime, poverty, etc. We switch our HD TVs to these mythological shows in part to escape from often much darker realities.
When we tell stories about these creatures, demonizing them but also giving them depth and complexity, we also tell stories about ourselves. Vampires will not be disappearing from satellite TV anytime soon, but that may be a good thing after all.
