Movies: The 2009 year had a great box-office, with many hits that kids would love to own. “Transformers 2,” “Twilight,” “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince” are just a few titles to get you thinking. “Up,” “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” and “The Race to Witch Mountain” also had rave reviews. Movies are a great family gift, since all children in a family will enjoy it. It can be very economical to give a movie to a family rather than individual gifts!

Books: In this technologically-driven age, books are a rare gift. Kids still love to read, but chances are, they don’t own very many books. While libraries are great for supplying books to kids, giving them a book encourages them to read and pursue an academic life. Not sure where to start with books? The Newberry Award winners are typically great reads, as are ALA notable books. The New York Times also puts out a list of top-selling Young Adult and Junior Fiction books. Your library should have these lists on hand to guide you.

Transformers: The Transformer toys are back and more creative than ever. Some Transformers can change into many different things. The most popular ones right now are Optimus Prime and BumbleBee. Both Transformer movies have been hits, so the kids don’t have them yet, chances are they might want to own them.

American Girl Dolls: The American Girl series is still very popular among young girls. The repertoire of American Girl items has increased to include movies, like “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl,” which came out last year before Christmas. Girls can get American Girl dolls that are created to look just like them, or choose from the selection of American Girl Dolls from the series. Girls love to get Christmas dresses for their doll, and American Girl even offers matching Christmas dresses for the girls to wear themselves. You can sign up for the American Girl catalog online, which girls love to look through and can help you get an idea for what your little American girl might want!

Dress up clothes: Dress up clothes are great for both boys and girls! Boys aren’t interested in the princess costumes like girls are, but they enjoy dressing up like firefighters, lions, and ninjas. Dress up clothes encourage imagination and creative play, and are one of those toys that don’t get “old.” Many home-school organizations use dress ups to teach about other cultures and for free play time. Girls love to wear princess costumes, and dance around. If you decide to get dress up clothes as a Christmas gift, don’t forget the accessories! Girls need feather boas for their princess costumes and boys need toy guns for their cowboy costumes!

Bicycles: These two-wheeled classics are still around and begging for attention. These are one of those semi-responsible gifts, since many children use a bicycle as a means of transportation to school and around town. Besides, what child isn’t excited to find a bike under the tree on Christmas morning?!

Wii: The Wii and accompanying Wii games are still top hits this Christmas. With Karaoke, the Wii Fit, Hannah Montana, and sword fighting, Wii has something for everyone. Rockband is also very popular with the teenage crowd, since it allows them to follow their love for music in a game they can play with their friends.

1. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON

Whether you like it or not, The Twilight Saga: New Moon is definitely one of the most anticipated movie of the year and therefore had to top our Christmas Movie List for a second year in a row. And since I am a fan of the Twilight series, The Twilight Saga: New Moon is my #1 movie to look forward to this Christmas.

2. AVATAR

Avatar shares the honor of making our #2 Christmas movie spot and also the distinction of being one of the most secretive movies ever developed to date. I was personally blown away by the footage shown at Comic Con. And with James Cameron’s track record, I think we are in for a real treat. And that is why Avatar is the number 2 movies to see this Christmas.

3. THE LOVELY BONES

The Lovely Bones has a few things going for it. It is based on a really great book, it has a great director, and a great cast. And the trailer looks really promising. Definitely a must see this Christmas.

4. THE ROAD

After being delayed for over a year now, the long overdue movie adaptation of The Road by Cormac McCarthy is finally hitting the screens. The subject matter combined with the amazing casting make this movie a must watch movie that even made our 2008 Christmas Movies list.

5. NINE

This new musical from Rob Marshall, not only has a really incredible cast, it is based on Federico Fellini’s 8 1/2. It certainly deserves a spot on the top 10 Christmas Movies of 2009.

6. INVICTUS

Clint Eastwood directing and Morgan Freeman starring as Nelson Mandela should be enough of an explanation as to why this movie made our top 10 Christmas Movies of 2009. And if it’s not, how about you add Matt Damon to the cast on top of that.

7. SHERLOCK HOLMES

The re-imagining of Sherlock Holmes from the mind of Guy Richie starring Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Watson. Need I to say more?

8. A CHRISTMAS CAROL

Even though this is the retelling of the story, it deserves a spot on the Top 10 Christmas Movies of 2009 because of how real the animation looks. The technology used in this movie is really impressive. And who wouldn’t want to see Jim Carrey as Scrooge?

9. THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG

The Princess and the Frog is a big deal this Christmas because it’s Disney’s revival of the hand- drawn animation tradition that a lot of people have been hoping for. And after seeing a few clips, it is clear that they have not lost their touch.

10. 2012

What’s better than a disaster movie for Christmas? 2012 is absolutely pure entertainment and fans of the genre are most likely in for a treat.

Video games are a popular item among people of all ages, and these would make great gifts for just about anyone, both men and women, and boys and girls. There is plenty of action for everyone! I wasn’t going to make this it’s own section, but due to the amount of information I had create it. Enjoy!

Gaming Console
I bet you already knew, huh? Boys and girls just love their video games, that is certainly nothing new! It’s basically a toss-up between the Xbox 360, the Playstation 3 (PS3), and the Nintendo Wii. At this point your at a crossroads since you may have no idea which system to buy, so I’ll try to be a bit helpful with your decision. Out of the three, the PS3 is the most powerful system as well as includes a built-in Blu-Ray player which may save you in the long run. The Xbox 360 is another powerful system, and it features a normal DVD player. The Nintendo Wii is the most affordable system, but the system itself isn’t that powerful, it’s just fun and friendly, especially when entire families are playing it.
Xbox 360 – If you don’t feel like spending a lot of money for the PS3, yet want to get a gift that is both popular as well as powerful, get the Xbox 360. This can play regular movie DVD’s as well. You need to pay for Xbox Live membership if you want to play online games, it’s not too expensive though. Also the online gameplay is pretty smooth and clear.
Playstation 3 (PS3) – Get this if you don’t mind spending extra money. You may end up saving in the long run since your child may sooner or later want a Blu-Ray player, and this comes with one. The PS3 let’s you play online for free, if you have broadband internet already.
Wii – If you know the boy wants a gaming system and you don’t have one yet, and at the same time you don’t have the money to burn for the more powerful and expensive systems, this is the best that your going to get.
I’m a pretty hardcore video gamer as well, and I may be a bit bias when I say that it’s more likely that your boy will enjoy the Xbox 360 or the PS3 the most. The Wii is a fun system, but it’s processors are not the most powerful and it makes the graphics not as good. I suppose the best rule of thumb would be this, just ask “What type of gaming system does your friends have?” and most likely they’ll answer it, and at the same time it’s not directly telling them that your getting him one. *** The game consoles I listed are bundles, which means they come with games. I did this on purpose just in case you forgot to get your boy a game and only the system, which at that point is pretty pointless! Just looking out for you!

There are two handheld gaming systems that are quite popular, the first is the Nintendo DS, which stands for Nintendo Dual-Screen. The next is the PSP, which stands for the Playstation Portable. To be honest, it’s hard to pick between the two, but on the bright side I have no doubt whichever one you buy your son will be quite happy!

Remote Control Vehicles
I remember growing up and having a remote control monster truck called Big Bubba. It was one of the most memorable experiences growing up, the only downside was when I drove it into a lake, that was no fun. I guess we all learn the hard way! I’m only going to show the top two bestsellers since there are so many to choose from. The number one bestseller is a remote control helicopter which I remember seeing an add for, it has plenty of good reviews of it too and it’s also cheap.
Scooters
A scooter is always a good gift. Why? Because it gets the boy outside for exercise and fresh air! I had one of these two while growing up, and I remember always having a tough time choosing between this and my bike. This would make an excellent gift that is both fun and healthy!
Gift Ideas for Girls
Finding the right gifts for pre-teen girls isn’t easy, since their now starting to blossom into young ladies their needs are a bit complex. With the help and input of my friends (notably the female friends) as well as going through the internet and searching bestsellers lists, I’ve compiled a list of what pre-teen girls would like for gifts. Also, don’t forget that girls like video games too!
Scooters
Since we left off with Scooters for boys, we’ll start that with girls (We’re already on the page). This is the number one pick for scooters for girls, and it’s reasonably priced so that helps a lot too. This is both fun as well as keeps your girls healthy and fit!
Bracelet Making Kits
You can’t go wrong with this one! Friends get together and enjoy some fun arts and crafts with a bracelet making kit. There are several kits out there, but this one is the first on the bestsellers list, as well as had high rankings.
Stamp Sets
This would make a wonderful addition to the bracelet making kit, you could even have an arts and crafts theme for the holidays. It comes with it’s own storage box, so clean-up should be a breeze.
Easy Bake Oven
You knew this one was going to be listed, didn’t you? I bet you did! I remember seeing commercials for this as I was growing up, and I even remember trying some Easy Bake brownies at a friends, which to my surprise were quite good! If you do pick this up, I recommend getting additional mixes because you know the ones that come with the oven will disappear quite fast.
Barbie
Did you know that Barbie has Twilight movie dolls? I didn’t, until I looked up the bestselling barbies and noticed that Bella, Jacob, and Edward dolls were on the top of the list. I suppose it makes sense due to the movie’s popularity. If she likes Twilight, I have no doubt she’ll appreciate these gifts!
Stickers
If there is one thing that I’ve noticed while growing up, is that girls love their stickers. They put them on everything, such as their folders, their notebooks, their diaries, and more. I think this would make a great low costing gift.
Coloring Books
This would greatly compliment the stickers up above, don’t you agree? They color their pictures and then after put stickers on them! Coloring books are always great for those who wish to express themselves in the form of art.
Apple Ipod
Does she have a love of music? One of the best gifts you can get is a portable music device, such as Apple’s Ipod. They are pretty affordable these days and are great for when she is on the go.
Gifts Ideas for Teen Boys
When boys start getting into their teens, it starts to become quite easy and also very difficult to get them the right gifts. Usually video games are a huge hit still, and quite possibly stay a hit all the way up until their an adult. But, aside from that there are quite a few things that are must-haves for teenage boys! Just remember, teenage boys want to be cool, so only buy things that will go with that image (their definition of cool, not yours).

Electric Guitar
Playing the electric guitar is often considered the hip and cool thing to do when your a teenager, especially a young teen. If someone asks you “Do you play the guitar?” you can respond with “Oh.. yeaa…” which could potentially add some popularity points for you. Aside from that, it’s a healthy expression of the soul and quite enjoyable too. This would make a good gift for anyone who is interested in music.
Ipod
I did feature this already for the girls category, but this is the time period in a young man’s life that it’s considered “cool” to have an Ipod. Besides, if they go out running for track, or biking for fun, an Ipod could be very useful!
Hit Video Games
You may want to check around for the latest video games that are considered smash hits. Often, you can just call up a local store and ask them “What is the latest and most popular game title for [insert your console system here]?” and they will respond with three to four titles for you to choose from. Remember, teenage boys love their action and bloodshed, so the more the merrier!
Laptop
This is the period in a teenager’s life where it’s important to have their own personal computers. In today’s world, a laptop would suit them while they are constantly on the go. Also, at the same time whenever they go off to college they will already have a laptop so you won’t have to buy them another one! I do recommend getting one that is capable of playing video games quite well, otherwise you may hear them complain about it.
Sports Gear
A lot of teenage boys are very active, but I’m pretty sure you know that already. They are always into some type of sports activity, and what better way to contribute is to get them some sports gear! The great thing about this is that it’s usually pretty affordable too. Please note, be sure they are into sports to begin with, otherwise whatever you buy them may sit on the shelf for the next ten years.
Movies
This has always been a very successful and low costing method of getting gifts for people. Usually you can spend under to get someone a movie they may like. A good rule of thumb is to keep track of the blockbuster hits, and you can by just going to an online movie retailer and sorting it by most rented or most viewed and that should give you an idea of which movie to buy (the most popular). Remember, you want to get him a cool movie.
Board & Card Games
Both board and card games both are very enjoyable as well as usually come with a cheap price tag. Since there are so many board and card games, I’m going to show you only one of each to give you some ideas. These are great gift ideas to beef up your gift giving selection!

Gift Ideas for Teen Girls
Just like teen boys, teen girls are equally as difficult to buy for. This is where having several trustworthy friends (girls) come in handy, as well as doing a bit of research on the bestselling lists in regards to what teenage girls buy. Oh, and yes, teenage girls do play plenty of video games as well!
Magazines
A lot of teenage girls read magazines, and there are plenty out there to pick from. Due to the competition of the internet and paper magazines, it’s driven the printed magazine’s price way down, and I mean, really far down. You can get a year subscription for next to nothing these days, and it’s worth checking out.
Cell Phone
Yes, that’s right! You know girls during their teen years are gossip and text-mongers! Your best bet is to get them a cell phone that comes with a slide keyboard, such as the Rumor or Rant. You know they will appreciate this gift, and you know that it will get a tremendous amount of use.
Girly Movies
I don’t mean to label them like this, but it’s the best way to quickly get the idea across! Usually teenage girls love movies about relationships and love, and getting them a couple for Christmas would be a great idea!
Diary
Girls love to talk, but they also love to write notes to each other, doodle, and write down secret crushes in their diaries. This is a great gift that I have no doubt will get some use.
Posters
You can’t go wrong with posters, although if you get movie star posters I would suggest that you find out who her favorite crushes are concerning movie stars, you wouldn’t want to get the wrong one!
Gift Cards
You know that females love their shopping, and getting them gift cards will make them dance around in glee as they consider what their going to spend their gift cards on. This is also great for those that just don’t know what to get their kids, what a loophole!
Webcam
Teenagers love staying in touch, posting their newest images on their Facebook, and much more. A webcam can can do both of those, they can talk live with their friends, as well as take screenshots (images) and upload them to Facebook.
Makeup & Lotion
You know that being a woman you need to look pretty, ever thought of giving some gifts such as makeup or skin lotion? There is a lot of different products to choose from, so I listed the top two in regards to makeup and skin lotion. But, you get the idea.

This is new fad on the internet which is quite popular amongst readers. The Kindle lets you load a lot of digital books, and I emphasize a lot, onto a single reader. There are many a Christmas film to entertain during this most special time of year and in spite of this tradition not going back as far as the music and stories that accompany this season; it has become just as much apart of Christmas as any other. Christmas films; now a days are just as eagerly awaited as perhaps the season itself by cinema goers all over the world with every season bringing on a new batch, most of which will probably be forgotten before the season returns the following year.

With regards to the history behind these films perhaps it can be said that the first films of this season limited themselves to subjects which portrayed the birth and life of Jesus Christ or at least the way it is said to have taken place in the “New Testament” of the bible. These films concentrating on showing three wise men being lead by a star to a place where the virgin Mary gave birth to the one whom Christians through out the world have called the messiah. Some films would include the events of Jesus’ life but for the most part these films of Christmas would limit themselves to the events that preceded his birth.

With time however Christmas films as did perhaps the season itself; moved away from only being focused on the birth of Christ and started including such themes as Santa Claus. This being the man who supposedly lives in the North Pole and gives presents to all those children, regardless of any condition other then weather or not they have been good through out the year.

Christmas eventually stretched beyond even these two themes and like Christmas itself which expanded so did the films concerning this time of year, to include the effect this season has on most people and their relationships to one another. As a strange coincidence or perhaps it was not the first film to go a way from these two themes was “A Christmas Carol”, based on the famous book written by Charles Dickens. As it might have been this story which was the first to concentrate on another matter concerning Christmas other then Jesus or Santa Claus.

With regards however to film versions of “A Christmas Carol”, the first of which was not even given this title but “Scrooge” (though sometimes also referred to as “Marley’s ghost”), it being released way back in 1901 as a short film. Many films however would follow based on the theme created by Dickens though perhaps the one that sticks out the most from all these versions of the same, at least as far as those which are in black and white is the one staring Reginald Owen in 1938 in the role of the Ebenezer Scrooge. The biter old man who needed to be reminded by three ghosts sent to him by his deceased business partner, Marley of the joy he once held for Christmas which had been replaced by his greed for money.

Where “A Christmas Carol” can be said to have been the first film to focus on other then religious subjects perhaps it is the film “It’s A Wonderful Life” which in a way goes back to them though again not concentrating on Jesus’ birth but on an angel coming down to earth to assist “George Bailey”. This being a man who on Christmas day decided that his path would be suicide to escape from a life he considered not to have been of use to any; only to be proven that in fact many around him would be far worse of if he had not been born.

“It’s A Wonderful Life” in my opinion and that of many (at least in the United States) others has in recent years replaced “A Christmas Carol” as far as being the most symbolic film of the Christmas season. As it perhaps even more so then “A Christmas Carol” captures that spirit so abundant during this season. That being the spirit of giving and sharing with our neighbors specially should they be in need or if they through out their lives have done as much as George Bailey did for those in his town of Bedford Falls. As for myself personally I would have to say that looking at this film even from a critical angle, that it is the one that I would recommend above all others when it comes to Christmas films. It combining sentimentalism but in a strange manner those who are portrayed as such are also shown as being practical. After all they in a way are simply showing their gratitude to the man who was responsible for them being able to buy the homes they live in. This sentiment being exclaimed in the line “I wouldn’t even have a roof over my head it if wasn’t for you George” used by one of the characters who contributes to solve George’s dilemma over the money which had been stolen from his savings and loan.

Perhaps one of the reasons why “It’s A Wonderful Life” has replaced “A Christmas Carol” as the standard Christmas film is because “It’s A Wonderful Life” contrary to “A Christmas Carol” has not had so many different versions made, which makes it that when people refer to it they naturally only think of the one made by Capra staring James Stewart. This being the case though a very forgettable version called “It happened One Christmas” was made in 1977 which given the fact that many were not familiar with the original version at the time become very popular. This till “It’s A Wonderful Life” was made popular on TV to the point of almost being shown at least once a day at Christmas time. All of which sending “It happened One Christmas” back to the obscurity from which it should have never left.

“A Christmas Carol” however has had many versions made of it, making it almost that there is no version which can be considered classic or even the original one. All of which making it hard for film viewers to focus on any one particular version or associating the main character “Ebenezer Scrooge” with any particular actor, given that many from George C. Scot to Henry Winkler (mostly known for his portrayal of the “Happy Days” character the “Fonz”) to Reginald Owen have played have played it. This not being the case for George Bailey; as this character has come to be associated exclusively with James Stewart.

“A Christmas Carol” perhaps because it was first known as a great piece of literature went on however to have its theme repeated not only in many a film but TV serials as well. For instance “The Odd Couple” did so when Oscar dreamed he was “Scrooge” being visited by the ghost of Felix; given that the ghost of Marley could not make it given that it was his busiest time of year. “The Six Million Dollar Man”, a TV show about a man turned part robot also took from this theme as did many a cartoon like “Mr. Magoo” and even Walt Disney cashed in on the idea using Donald Duck’s rich but often parsimonious Scottish uncle.

However, many are the films regarding Christmas that I would say deserve honorable mention such as “The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t”, which I might add I went to see with my class while a student at the parochial school I attended in my early years in New York City. “The Christmas That Almost Wasn’t” I would recommend as being nice though it perhaps lacks somewhat in originality as it takes a page from “It’s A Wonderful Life”. This coming in the form that it is the children who help Santa raise the money he needs to pay off his debt or the toys he has worked on all year will be taken instead.

However when mentioning Christmas films there are some which I would not take even the most rotten kids I know to see such as the one made with Dudley Moore called “Santa Claus” or “Miracle On 34th Street”. This last film being in extremely poor taste in my opinion; as it tries to show the hardships of a “poor little girl” who cries because she has to content herself with living in luxurious apartment on Westside of Central Park; given her mother does not own an equally posh house in the country. This “poor girl’s” tragedy is even augmented because she has no father, as if her more then loving mother were not enough. This making me think of how one could classify those orphaned children I saw living on the streets of South America, who had to do with much less then this spoilt American child; while not having anybody what so ever.

Of course there are other films which were made and can be purchased on DVD such as “The Bells Of Saint Marry” though this film I know very little about as I have neither seen it nor read its synopsis and what little I do know about it is that there is a Swedish actress by the name of Ingrid Bergman, who plays a nun. This being what I picked up from a scene in “The Godfather” in which Michael Corleone (played by Al Pacino) and his girlfriend, Kate (Played by Diane Keaton) walk out of Radio City (when they showed films there) after seeing it and comment on how perhaps Michael would prefer it if Kate were a nun or Ingrid Bergman. I having little in the way of knowledge about this film can not recommend it though I have heard from many that it is worth seeing but then again this was what I heard about that tactless film “Miracle On 34th Street”.

As for animated films that have taken my interest during this time of year, I would have to say that “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” ranks up there as one of the finest films I have seen connected to this time of year. This 30 minute animated film by “Doctor Zeus” showing how a little girl teaches the mean Grinch, that there is more to Christmas then toys and decorations; is a real Christmas classic which no child should ever miss. Those who see this film in English and are old enough might recognize the voice of Boris Karloff (real name William Pratt), also known for his portrayal of Frankenstein. Where I recommend this animated film I by no means do so the idiotic film version made in recent years with the same title by director Ron Howard (also known for his portrayal of the Happy Days character Ritchie Cunningham) staring Jim Carey. This because I have a hard time deciding if this film is even a bigger tragedy then some of the other Christmas disasters I have tried to watch on TV; most of which I will not even mention in this article.

TV shows have also contributed great stories for this time of year known as Christmas and it is with all my heart that I would like to recommend to those who should read this article, that this Christmas they turn on Youtube and watch the episode of the Twilight Zone; entitled “Night Of The Meek”. This being a truly igneous story of a man of good nature by the name of Henry Corwin; who through the magic that is Christmas is literally transformed in to Santa Claus but not before having been fired from his Job as the department store Santa Clause for drunkenness.

It is this story which I would say is my favorite as far as stories portraying the character who is also known as Saint Nick. As it portrays Henry Corwin as a generous man, who drinks because he is unable to help the poor and helpless one’s as he refers to them who are all around him. One of which contrary to the child in “Miracle On 34th Street” asks not for a house in the country but a job for his unemployed father. It is however when confronted by a bag of Christmas presents which seems to not only never run out of presents but have in it all that those around ask for; such as toys, sweaters and just about anything anybody could want that Henry Corwin gets what he always wanted. To become the biggest gift giver of all.

In conclusion I would say that Christmas is a wonderful time of year and perhaps in a way it is made more so by the films mentioned in this article; for they thanks to their stories show us how this time of year can truly bring people closer together in a way that nothing else can. As for a personal confession of mine, I must say that “It’s A Wonderful Life” along with “The Night Of Meek” never fail to bring tears to my eyes. This being the case regardless of weather I find myself watching or even describing their plots as I have done so in this piece of mine.
