Charles Beaumont was one of the masters of fantasy writing. During his relatively short life, from his first publication in 1951 to his last short story in 1963, Beaumont’s prodigious output of quality literary craftsmanship was amazing.

Beaumont wrote magazine articles, comic books for Dell publishers, scripts for television, novels, and a multitude of short stories for Fantasy & Science Fiction, Rogue and Playboy. His many dedicated fans avidly seek first edition publications authored by Beaumont.

The diversity of topics he wrote about was also amazing. Beaumont wrote about racial discrimination, car racing, jazz, and love. Some of the classic episodes for the original The Twilight Zone television program feature some of Beaumont’s scripts.

Several publications have compiled works from Beaumont. Best of Beaumont was published in 1982. Charles Beaumont: Selected Stories was published by Dark Harvest in 1988. This book has Beaumont’s first story, The Devil you Say, published in 1950, and his last short story, Mourning Song, published in 1963.

Fortunately, Beaumont’s good friend, William F. Nolan, authored a comprehensive work titled The Work of Charles Beaumont, which has become an important reference on the life and work of this master writer. Nolan’s authoritative reference book was revised and published in 1990.

Beaumont wrote several hardcover books. His first hardcover was The Hunger published by G. P. Putnam’s Sons in 1957. Boardman published this book in 1959, and it is one of the most coveted collectibles published by Beaumont. The Hunger has 17 short stories authored by Beaumont.

In 1958, Beaumont authored an anthology on auto racing titled Omnibus of Speed. His friend and literary giant in his own right, William F. Nolan, served as co-editor. This hardcover does not have a paperback version. Also in 1958, Remember? Remember?, a hardcover containing a collection of non-fiction pieces that was originally appeared in Playboy, was published.

Beaumont’s fourth hardcover book was Run from the Hunter. Published by Purnell in Great Britain in 1959, Run from the Hunter was Beaumont’s first novel. This book first appeared as a paperback published by Fawcett in 1957.

The fifth hardcover book authored by Beaumont was The Intruder in 1959. This was also Beaumont’s first paperback, which was similarly first published in 1959.

The creative fantasy of Charles Beaumont lives on. His literary work remains as impressive now as it did when Beaumont penned his masterpieces more than a half a century ago.
