I first learned about the Twilight series this summer. I read an article about how this series was even more popular than the Harry Potter books amongst teenage girls.
Well, as a fiction writer, I had to check that out. So on the Saturday before I was leaving on vacation, I went to the bookstore and bought Twilight (which is the first one in the series) and another book. I figured reading the first one would be enough — after all, it’s been a few years since I was in high school.
I started reading Twilight Saturday night. By Sunday night I was back in the bookstore buying the second two in the series. I had the second one read before I left for vacation and forced myself to wait until I was in the airport to start the third. (Needless to say, I ended up having to work part of my vacation because I got so caught up with those books.)
I’m not even going to tell you what I went through to get my hands on the fourth one.
Now, before you think I’ve got the emotional maturity of a 16-year-old, let me assure you I am not the only adult woman out there who got caught up in these books. In fact, there’s a massive online community out there called “Twilight Moms” — which, as its name suggests, was created for adult women. Not to mention I’ve given the books to my adult friends who have also devoured them.
(In case you’ve been ignoring cultural news, the Twilight series is about a teenage girl who falls in love with a vampire.)
So, what is the secret of Twilight’s success? Is it fantastic writing? Nope. The writing is perfectly good, but there are plenty of other writers who I think are better stylistically and don’t have runaway best-sellers.
Is it the characters? No. The characters are good but so are a lot of characters in novels that aren’t causing a worldwide phenomenon.
How about the plot? Nothing wrong with the plot but nothing that’s standing out either.
So what IS it about Twilight? It’s the story.
Now, just so you understand, this is the difference between plot and story. Plot is a series of events: character A goes here, goes there, gets bit by a vampire, etc. Story is what’s going on at a deeper level — it’s the emotional connection the reader has with the novel.
(Note, in case you’re thinking this also parallels features and benefits in copywriting, where features are the facts or plot and benefits is the emotions or story, you’d be right.)
So what Stephenie Meyer, the author of Twilight, has done is a bunch of things perfectly well and one thing extraordinary.
And that, my friends, is one of the points I’m trying to make.
Successful people don’t have to do everything extraordinary. In fact, I suspect that would be impossible. No, they do most things perfectly well, equal to what a lot of people are doing, and one or two things out of this world.
So what one or two things can YOU focus on and do so extraordinary it transforms you into a massive success?
The second point is about connecting emotionally with your audience. You see, Stephenie Meyer picked the right thing to be extraordinary at — the emotional connection with her readers. And if your audience, your target market, connects emotionally with what you’re selling, then not only will you have an easier time selling to them, you’ll also be in a position to create a tight bond with them.
(And for all you guys out there, yes I think it would be worth your while to take a look at the book. And don’t be surprised if you find yourself buying the series and reading it over a weekend.)

The Xlibris release, Calvin’s Journey with Parkinson’s, chronicles Calvin Broadhead’s life and his efforts to survive Parkinson’s disease. Author Bonnie McCollough Broadhead brings full attention to her husband’s story and the degenerative disease that has beset Calvin and people in their twilight years.
Parkinson’s disease impairs a person’s motor skills, speech and other motor functions due to the degeneration of the central nervous system. The manifestation of this disease can range from movement disorders to high-level cognitive dysfunction to subtle language problems. It is these symptoms and other experiences that Bonnie details in this self-published book.
Calvin’s Journey with Parkinson’s also highlight’s the title character’s strength and courage throughout his experience of failing health. It is the Bonnie’s intention to bring wisdom pertaining to Parkinson’s disease, so others who suffer the illness can learn from similar circumstances that Calvin went through.
Calvin’s Journey with Parkinson’s is a helpful resource for individuals with Parkinson’s disease and people who have loved ones who suffer from the illness.
About the Author
Bonnie McCollough Broadhead was born December 25, 1928, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. She was the first born of five children into the family of Amanda Josephine Hensarling McCollough and Myles McCollough. She finished high school and earned two years of college. She married Calvin C. Broadhead in January 1947 and they has two daughters — Carmen Colleen Broadhead Malone and Deborah Amanda Broadhead Houston.
Calvin was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1987 shortly after his retirement. He died July 9, 2002. Both their daughters and all three of Bonnie’s brothers are very attentive to her. They take special care of her needs. Bonnie now reside in Madison, Mississippi, with her oldest daughter.

Note: Watch it in High Quality! Might take a bit longer to load but it’s worth it. Kris’ secretary has given in to the Twilight fandom. Seeing that Kris, herself, likes vampire stories, the secretary has gone out of her way to buy the book for her. This is an introduction to a series of “Twilight Rants” that I’m going to work on. The subtle sparkle reference is in preparation to the next video. Uninteresting notes: +I actually bought the book out of curiosity in Dec. 2007 but had finished only 20% of it and had not read it since then. Only when I heard of the hubbub that I looked at the book again recently, and realized why I might have stopped reading it. +The book I read in the beginning was “The Bloody Chamber” by Angela Carter +I was actually using glitter…glitter lotion to be exact and I had that bottle since 7th grade. The webcam, unfortunately, had a problem catching it. +The voice of Edward is a homage to another infamous fic.

As an American, the only experience I’ve generally had of Tony Blair, in his time as leader of Great Britain, are the glimpses of him through the U.S. media. When Princess Diana tragically died in 1997, it was Blair who suggested that she was the “people’s princess”. Blair’s immediate compassion following the 9/11 atrocities was also evident. But, it wasn’t until the recent publication of the new Tony Blair book “A Journey”: My Political Life, that audiences in America had the chance to learn about him on a more personal level.
Blair’s Insight of America and it’s People in “A Journey”
Blair attempts a bit of Oscar Wilde in the opening. He writes, “America’s burden is that it wants to be loved, but knows it can’t be”. Which, seeing as Blair isn’t an American, is a peculiar statement for an American to digest. He then goes on to impart more of his views on American society. In my opinion, Blair’s comments and insights about American culture are a bit pathetic, however he seems to be a bit more accurate in his thoughts and comments on Clinton and Bush, which makes for very interesting reading.
When Tony Blair appeared, in 2008, on Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show, he gave a very good account of himself when questioned about the military conflict in Iraq – especially when compared to our own George W, Bush. “America and England have a strong bond with one another” was his message – and we all agreed. Blair declined to criticize President Bush when pushed and has remained faithful to his Political associates in his book.
American Presidents
In his book, Tony Blair verifies what many Americans thought about President Bill Clinton. He doesn’t hold back in his compliments of President Clinton, calling him “brilliant” and “formidable”. He also offers an accurate tribute when he says, “the blessings of his times is the disadvantage of his legacy.” However, Blair stays true to form, keeping his religious beliefs and his political life separate, by not mentioning Clinton’s nadir, the Monica Lewinsky humiliation.
When mentioning George W. Bush, Blair is more cautious with his words and less complimentary. He says that President Bush was a less complex character who tended to make his decisions, not from a particularly rational or intellectual stand point, but from a more simplistic guide of what’s right and wrong.
Blairs admiration for President Obama is clearly evident in his book. He pays tribute to Obama’s moral fiber and agrees that he is both unswerving and strong-minded. Tony Blair also praises President Obama’s calmness. He says that it wasn’t until the twilight of his premiership that he was himself able to attain that level of serenity.
Whilst some of the new Tony Blair book could be construed as being a bit insulting to America, I myself would heartedly recommend it – if only for the very interesting insights into our own presidents and Blair’s relationship with them.

He also offers an accurate tribute when he says, “the blessings of his times is the disadvantage of his legacy.” However, Blair stays true to form, keeping his religious beliefs and his political life separate, by not mentioning Clinton’s nadir, the Monica Lewinsky humiliation.
When mentioning George W. Bush, Blair is more cautious with his words and less complimentary. He says that President Bush was a less complex character who tended to make his decisions, not from a particularly rational or intellectual stand point, but from a more simplistic guide of what’s right and wrong.
Blairs admiration for President Obama is clearly evident in his book. He pays tribute to Obama’s moral fiber and agrees that he is both unswerving and strong-minded. Tony Blair also praises President Obama’s calmness. He says that it wasn’t until the twilight of his premiership that he was himself able to attain that level of serenity.
Whilst some of the new Tony Blair book could be construed as being a bit insulting to America, I myself would heartedly recommend it – if only for the very interesting insights into our own presidents and Blair’s relationship with them.
