Some prod, others plod. Do first lines really matter?

FIRST lines are a book’s greeting to the reader and therefore a vital element in the whole. If it strikes the wrong note, a weak opening can nullify a great cover or an enticing jacket blurb. On the other hand, a good initial hook captures the reader from the start. Yet does it signal a bestseller? Consider some of these.
One of my favourite openings is from 1984 by George Orwell, and reads thus: “It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.”
Now here’s another teaser, simple but grabbing, from The Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison: “I am an invisible man.”
Any book browser has to pursue such an outrageous first-person claim.
Or how about Dodie Smith’s opening to I Capture The Castle: “I write this sitting in the kitchen sink.”
Why the heck is she in the kitchen sink? One can’t help but read on.
The same, yet more dramatic, applies to the intro of Run Maggie Run by John Ivor, which has been compared to a Dickens tale: “A finger of sunshine poked through the grime of courtroom windows, polished the dock’s varnished panels and created a halo for the prisoner, she who was known as Maggie, age nine. The charge was murder.”
A later novel, No Kiss For A Killer, allows John Ivor to flow fast action from line one: “There was a time, a desperate time, when I cursed the gentle mists of my native Oxfordshire and regretted its picturesque vales and folds. Among the fruitful brown and green a deceptive dip will conceal the approach of riders.”
Dickens himself is not noted for his openings, which are usually wordy and mild. His first published fiction, The Pickwick Papers, starts like this: “The first ray of light which illumines the gloom, and converts into a dazzling brilliancy that obscurity in which the earlier history of the public career of the immortal Pickwick would appear to be involved, is derived from the perusal of the following entry in the Transactions of the Pickwick Club, which the editor of these papers feels the highest pleasure in laying before his readers, as a proof of the careful attention, indefatigable assiduity, and nice discrimination, with which his search among the multifarious documents confided to him has been conducted.”
All one can say to that verbosity is Ouch!
However, the opening of a later Dickens novel is often quoted: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”
That is how he begins A Tale of Two Cities, which is a story of the French Revolution.
Another oldie, less intense than guillotine days but more intriguing in commencement, is still widely popular: “Here is Edward Bear, coming downstairs now, bump, bump, bump, on the back of his head, behind Christopher Robin . . .”
Guessed it? Winnie the Pooh, by A.A. Milne.
Charles Bryce uses the same technique to charm children in introducing Mousedeer: “Deep in the forest comes a breeze. Hush! Hear it whisper . . .”
For browsers, whether in a bookshop or online, first lines become mightily important in deciding whether to buy an unknown author. These lines need not necessarily be thrilling or puzzling. The only need is to get the reader’s interest.
Here’s one I particularly like. It introduced me to The Feng Shui Detective’s Casebook by Nury Vittachi: “The tiger loping through the supermarket had blue eyes.”
If that doesn’t grab you, nothing will. Now let’s glance at some current bestsellers.
Stieg Larsson, late author of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and other super sellers, doesn’t bother with a clever hook. He simply sweeps straight into the action, like a movie. His narrative comes close to ponderous, often boring, and yet it keeps moving.
While a good opening will influence a sale, it never guarantees a bestseller. There is no way to prejudge mass appeal. The phenomenal Stephenie Meyer began her Twilight series with an insipid girls’ school scene. No hint here of vampires and scary doings, nor worldwide fame for the author.
Dan Brown begins The Lost Symbol in gripping fashion, thus: “The secret is how to die.”
His thriller degenerates thereafter, yet still it has soared to bestseller status. It has the most valuable ingredient of all – a brandname author.
The 2009 Booker Prize winner Hilary Mantel opens Wolf Hall with a spoken jibe: “So now get up. Felled, dazed, silent, he has fallen; knocked full length on the cobbles of the yard.”
This is ongoing action, the middle of a fight, and encourages a read-on.
Bryce McBryce gives first lines his own delightful twist. The amusing and nostalgic Wee Charlie’s World starts thus: “Smaller than a kitbag and only four years, the youngest in that army, Charlie watched the soldiers come aboard: pith helmets, khaki shorts, puttees, boots, bolt-action rifles.”
The above book is presented as linked short stories while a boy grows from age four to nine pondering the weirdness of adults. All McBryce chapter opening are good, but one demanding instant attention kicks off The Spirit of Waterloo: “Alphonse haunted the garrison school because it was there. It was heavily there, on his grave.”
Brilliant lead-ins will always have their place in literature but do they really matter to the eventual destiny of a book? This is a question I challenge readers to answer, because there is no analysis that can enlighten us for sure. Apart from brandname authors who sell millions on reputation alone, it remains a mystery how book readers will respond to a particular title. Happy reading! From Cathy, www.booktaste.com, 2 Feb, 2011.

So You Want to Sell Comic Books
When I was a kid I dreamed that one day I would have my very own store and that I would sell comic books to the local children. Comic books were so much a part of my life growing up and it was the same for my son as he was growing. When I was a kid it was Spiderman and The Fantastic Four, or any of the other Marvel titles. My son however loved Superman and he collected all the great Superman titles of the mid to late 1980s when Superman had a resurgence of popularity.

Drawing Comic Books and Graphic Novels for a Living
What artistically inclined kid has not dreamed of one day drawing comic books for a living? To be able to sell your doodling and make a great living seems too good to be true. Imagine finishing your first comic book for Marvel or DC and becoming an international sensation. You can then go back to your grammar school teachers and wave the comics in their face while lighting your cigar with a 0 bill.

It’s Easy to buy Comic Books Online
Back in the good old days, if a kid had a quarter in his pocket he would jump on his skateboard or Schwinn Stingray bicycle and head as fast as he could to the five-and-dime and pick up the newest copy of Spiderman or my favorite, Journey into Mystery featuring the Mighty Thor. These great Marvel Silver Age comics are now worth thousands of dollars and it all started with some kid and his quarter.

Golf Vacation Packages – Some Questions to Ask
Posted: Apr 11, 2007 |Comments: 0

When you know what questions to ask about golf vacation packages, making arrangements are much easier. One specific destination to investigate is a Las Vegas vacation. When you start planning your Las Vegas golf vacation package, there are a number of details that you need to consider. This article will review several frequently asked questions you can ask to help you tee it up with confidence that you are getting the best vacation experience that you can.
What is your cancellation policy for this package, either lodging or tee-times?
When you are arranging a package at one of the Las Vegas golf resorts, ask the booking agent what happens when you cancel. Many agents need a week or two week notice. If you book just golf, expect that you will need to provide 48 hours notice to cancel tee times.
When does your credit card get charged for your lodging and golf?
This is important to make sure you have enough balance to cover your golf vacation package. Many booking agents do expect a deposit when you book the package. The deposit may be as great as 100%. Others agents may charge less, but almost every one of them requires full payment before your scheduled travel. Make sure to get the details about the deposit and any charges for cancellations.
Why use a booking agent when you can make your own arrangements?
The best agencies have been in business for many years and have developed friendships with Las Vegas hotels and golf courses. This gives the agent negotiating power. They have the ability to ask for and get the best values and pricing available which is a break for you. Also, agencies have Golf Vacation Planners who know the lodging and courses. They can find the destinations and the best marketplace values for what you want. This can save you you hundreds of dollars per person.
How do you process upgrades, changes or cancellations?
Always treat your booking agency as your travel provider. You will receive information and pricing on upgrades and they will handle any required changes or cancellations to your reservation.
How do you handle changing the exact itinerary for “special” vacation packages?
Booking agencies offer “Specials” from time to time with discounted prices. If you like most of what is included in the Special, but want a few options, talk to the booking agent. Many times, the agent can tweak the “Special” and still give you substantial savings. Remember to ask for exactly what you want.
Can the agency arrange lower cost afternoon twilight rates, reserve 36 holes in a day or reserve rental golf clubs?
Because of their relationship with golf course staff, a booking agency can help you get twilight and re-play rates when available. For many Las Vegas golf resorts, most courses take advanced reservations to rent golf clubs at .00 -.00 a day. A non-playing partner can ride along in your golf cart for to , depending on the course.
When you ask the right questions, you know what to look for in golf vacation packages and take the risk out of your Las Vegas vacation.

Some More Ideas About How To Write Fiction
Posted: Oct 07, 2009 |Comments: 0

]]>
The most important thing about writing is structure. You cannot just rush into a piece of writing without some feeling for the form of what you are going to write. Of course it’s a great idea to zoom off a few inspired pages, but then you do have to stop and think. Where’s the start, what’s the story, what’s going to be the gripping climax? Tchaikovsky used to paste his music around the walls of his room to see the structure. A piece of music is like a book: you only experience one part of it at once. So every bit must be carefully scrutinized, honed, perfected to fit with every other piece. The story line can let you up and down: but keep the tension – or the reader will start to snore. Think how in Macbeth the tension is maintained.
Suggestion 1. You need to introduce your characters, or mice, or subatomic particles, or whatever it is that you are writing about. A single line can sometimes do it very nicely. I want to quote from a very short story (a “nanostory”) written by a school pupil whom I know. The story started: “There was an old lady at an old-age home.” This immediately conjures up a picture, a different picture for everybody no doubt, but nevertheless, you are there with the old lady.
Suggestion 2. The story itself, after the start, must have, a middle and an end. From the same story: “Her passion was to look out of the window watching the sun go up and down over the North Sea. She had been watching for many years now, but she never got tired of it.” The middle: “It was the highlight of the day and the thing which kept her alive. But one day a new modern building came right in front of her window.” The end: “The old lady died a week later.” Perfect! A couple more examples: the first: “On a sleepy, sunny afternoon I was sitting on the banks of a canal, when a barge came chugging gently towards me. On the deck sat an old man smoking a pipe. As the barge approached, it began slowly to sink and as it passed by, the water was already lapping about the old man’s legs. The canal turned a corner and the last I saw was the bowl of the old man’s pipe sticking out of the water like a periscope.”
The second: “Driving along a country road in late twilight I saw a mole on the tarmac. The poor creature was stunned and it needed somewhere warm and cozy, so I placed it in my left shoe. This tumbled over at a corner and the mole, now wide awake, scuttled out and hid under the clutch pedal. The traffic lights turned to red in front of me and I slowed down changing into third. The next car that I buy will be an automatic, so that this can never happen again.” All are nicely structured and they work, even if they are very, very short!
The next thing is style. Style’s thing of most importance is intelligibly to clearly express what it, or he, or she, or maybe a cat or dog, would think if they had had the brains to talk or they wanted, in a manner of speaking, to express it or whatever it was.
Suggestion 1: write so that people can understand what you want to say.
Suggestion 2: grab the reader’s imagination from the first line of the start of the work. For example: “The dog bit him on the ankle so hard that he screamed in agony…” or “He was the most gorgeous man she had ever met, but, and it was a big but, he had a big butt…etc.” For comparison you might try to write the most boring first line possible: “There had been a small earthquake in the north of Chile. No buildings had fallen and nobody was hurt…”
Suggestion 3: Try and keep it simple. This is what the reader has come to expect in the 21st century. Do not indulge yourself in great flights of florid language stretching like geese across a lurid sunset, mixing images like geese and florid – when did you last see a flowery goose? Try to avoid doing this and other horrid things with the English language. Avoid ‘purple passages’: one example from that wonderful novel ‘She’ by Rider Haggard is enough: “quivering footsteps of the dawn came rushing across the new-born blue and shook the high stars from their places… From the east to the west sped the angels of the Dawn, from sea to sea, from mountain top to mountain top scattering light with both their hands. On they sped out of the darkness, perfect, glorious, like spirits of the just breaking from the tomb…It was a wonderfully beautiful sight, and yet sad, perhaps from the very excess of its beauty…. etc. etc.” In other words, the sun rose.

Some of the popular books of 2009 that should be read

Recording memories in mediums that can be seen and felt has always been the wish of mankind ever since the ancient times. The practice of noting down information on paper goes quite a long way back in fact, beyond the era of the Egyptians.
The great Pharaohs loved spending their time by reading books and so did the kings and emperors of Greece and Rome. The world today is one that sees an influx of many things along with a decrease in the number of human beings who love to read books.
However, things are looking up with the number of readers having seen an increase in the current years. The reasons for this lie in the form of the books that were released in the year 2007, 2008. Moreover, the books that have been released in 2009 are also capable of becoming worthy reasons to account for the increase in the number.
Some of the books that have made the headlines are as follows:
1. Coraline
2. The Friday Night knitting club
3. Breaking Dawn (the fifth one the Twilight series)
4. New Moon (the fourth one in the Twilight series)
Coraline is quite a wonderful book and it has been written by the well known author Neil Gaiman. This story of this book revolves the central character called Coraline who lives in a very big house which is also inhabited by many other amusing characters. The element of boredom is the central part of the life of this girl who in order to escape the boredom start to count the number of things that have their colour as Blue.
She, therefore, arrives at a door (which is the 14th door that she locates in the course of her counting). The readers of this book might think that the next page would lead on to another stereotypical fairy tale story with the plot resembling somewhat that of ‘the Chronicles of Narnia’ or even ‘Alice in Wonderland’ for that matter.
But this is where the story takes an unexpected twist and one that is liable to take anyone who reads this book by surprise. Though a world exists beyond this door but it is one which is dark, terrifying and houses nothing but nightmarish things of life.
This book is anyway quite an interesting one to read and one should read it at least once in order to grasp the magnificence of the plot.
Another wonderful book which can be given as an example is the second one in the list mentioned earlier and this book is known as the Friday night Knitting club.
The plot of this book is all about friendship with the medium initiating the act of friendship being none other than knitting. The story can be associated with any real life situation and this fact makes this book all the more interesting to anyone who reads it.
These two examples are quite capable of giving an insight about the potential of all those books which are becoming highly popular books this year. In other words, the popular books of 2009 are certainly ones that are capable of making anyone happy and content.
