The popularity of the Twilight movie series lately has sparked a renewed interest in all things vampire. Even if you are not a fan of the book or movie series, you can’t miss them all over television and in the news. It began as a figment of imagination many years ago, and has now become a movie genre with fans all over the world.
Vampire legends have been around for years all around the world. Vampires are said to be witches, ghosts, or evil spirits who live by drinking human blood. It is believed that the origin of this myth came from the innate fear of the unknown that we all have in the corners of our minds. Most cultures have vampire legends of some sort and Hollywood has banked on the interest of the scary subject.
Dracula is probably the best known and most represented vampire of all time. In 1931, Bela Lugosi’s portrayal of Dracula set the stage for vampire movies for years to come. Over the years, many variations of the Dracula story have been written in books and filmed time after time for television and movies.
Although Dracula is more recognized, the film Nosferatu, produced in 1922, is more likely the origin of all vampire related movies. A silent movie starring Max Schreck, it was an unlicensed German version of Braum Stoker’s novel, a book that has been published in more than one hundred fifty versions over the years. This film usually makes the top-ten list of most experts in the vampire movie industry.
Although there is some variety among vampire movies these days, some of the basic elements are the same. Of course, the vampire is usually the dreaded main character. All vampires need a good vampire hunter to create a story as well. According to the legends, it is commonly seen that vampires can only be killed by a wooden stake through their hearts, can’t go out in the sunlight, have no reflection and are afraid of holy water and crucifixes.
Vampire movies today have a much wider audience than those of the past. Movies such as The Lost Boys, Braum Stoker’s Dracula, Blade and Van Helsing have wooed audiences who may not have been interested in the vampire legend before. Combine a few good looking actors, and a tragic love story and you’ve got a good fit for many movie goers worldwide.
While the basic premise of the vampire in these movies is the same, filmmakers worldwide are striving to give the public a unique twist on the classic tale. In fact, it has been said that Dracula with more than 150 films made about him, has been the subject of more movies than any other fictional character. Upcoming films such as sequels in the Twilight series, and others like Midnight Son, will continue to expand the vampire film genre. With so many vampire movies out there, audiences are likely to find just the right one for them.

On one hand, I understand where he’s coming from. Unlike Harry Potter, Twilight, Lord of the Rings, and essentially every other popular book series out there except Narnia, there is a common set of characters that is carried throughout the whole story. That doesn’t happen with Narnia. In every book, there are different characters. Even from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to The Silver Chair, while a few main characters carry over, almost all of the secondary characters are new.
I would suspect from a movie marketing standpoint this is a nightmare to have to remind people who aren’t familiar with the series that “Hey! This is Narnia again!” And I suspect that’s why we keep seeing the White Witch, Peter, and Susan popping up on The Voyage of the Dawn Treader ads.
That being said, in this Narnia fan’s opinion the uniqueness of each book is precisely one of the strengths of the series and sets it apart from any other franchise. Sure we say goodbye to the Pevensies for a while, but we get Jill Pole and Puddleglum, Shasta and Aravis, Digory and Polly, Tirian and Jewel!

It is based on the novel of the same name by Stephenie Meyer and is the sequel to 2008’s Twilight, which is based on Meyer’s previous novel. Summit Entertainment greenlit the sequel in late November 2008, following the early triumph of Twilight. Directed by Chris Weitz, themovie stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, reprising their roles as Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, and Jacob Black, respectively. Melissa Rosenberg, who handed in a draft of the film script during the opening weekend of Twilight, returns as the screenwriter for the second installment as well.
The movie was released on November 20, 2009 in most countries, and set domestic box office records as the biggest midnight screening with .3 million. This led to thelargest single day domestic gross with .7 million. New Moon also opened with the third biggest domestic opening weekend (2,839,137)
* Don Cheadle as Lt. Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes / War Machine: Cheadle is replacing Terrence Howard from the first motion picture. Howard said, “There was no reason, apparently the contracts that we write and sign aren’t worth the paper that they’re printed on, now and then. Deals aren’t kept, and good faith discussions aren’t always held up.” Entertainment Weekly said Favreau did notenjoy operating with Howard, often reshooting and cutting his scenes; Howard’s publicist stated he had a fine experience playing the part, while Marvel chose not to comment. As Favreau and Theroux decided to lessen the role, Marvel came to Howard to discuss reducing his wages – Howard was the first artist hired in Iron Man and earned the biggest salary of the cast. The publication said they were unsure whether Howard’s council left the project first or if Marvel decided to discontinue negotiating. Theroux denied the part of the report stating “the role of War Machine was scaled back and then pumped up”. Cheadle just had a few hours to take the role and were not aware which storyline Rhodes would undergo.He stated he is a comic book fan, but felt there are not enough black superheroes.

Jake has unwittingly been recruited to become part of this encroachment. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have produced genetically-bred human-Na’vi hybrids known as Avatars. On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake will be able to walk again. Sent deep into Pandora’s jungles as a scout for the soldiers that will follow, Jake encounters many of Pandora’s beauties and dangers. There he meets a young Na’vi female, Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña).
Over time, Jake integrates himself into the Na’vi clan, and begins to fall in love with Neytiri. As a result, Jake finds himself caught between the military-industrial forces of Earth and the Na’vi, making him to choose sides in an epic battle that will decide the fate of an entire world.
Avatar is without a doubt the biggest movie of the year. Award winning James Cameron has been working on this movie since the release of his last huge blockbuster Titanic. A lot of movies these days get a lot of hype and do not live up to it, but I guarantee Avatar is going to deliver in a big way.

New Moon (marketed as The Twilight Saga: New Moon) is a 2009 American romantic fantasy film. The movie was released on November 20, 2009 in most countries, and set domestic box office records as the largest midnight screening with .3 million. This led to thelargest single day domestic gross with .7 million. New Moon also opened with the third biggest domestic opening weekend (2,839,137)
* Don Cheadle as Lt. Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes / War Machine: Cheadle is replacing Terrence Howard from the primary film. Howard said, “There was no reason, apparently the contracts that we write and sign aren’t worth the paper that they’re written on, now and then. Deals aren’t kept, and good faith discussions aren’t always held up.” Entertainment Weekly stated Favreau did not like operating with Howard, often reshooting and deleting his scenes; Howard’s publicist said he had aexcellent time playing the role, while Marvel decided not to comment. As Favreau and Theroux decided to lessen the role, Marvel came to Howard to talk about lowering his wages – Howard was the first artist hired in Iron Man and earned the biggest salary of the cast. The publicationcommented they were uncertain whether Howard’s council left the project first or if Marvel chose to end negotiating. Theroux denied the part of the report stating “the role of War Machine was scaled back and then pumped up”. Cheadle just had a few hours to take the role and were not aware which storyline Rhodes would undergo.He commented he is a comic book fan, but felt there are not enough black superheroes.

Jake has inadvertently been brought to become part of this encroachment. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have produced genetically-bred human-Na’vi hybrids known as Avatars. On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake will be able to walk again. Avatar is without a doubt the biggest movie of the year. Award winning James Cameron has been working on this movie since the release of his last huge blockbuster Titanic. A lot of movies these days get a lot of hype and do not live up to it’ but I guarantee Avatar is going to deliver in a big way.
